New Crescent Moon of Ramadan 1441:

The Astronomical New Moon (conjunction) is on April 23, 2020 (Thursday) at 2:26 UT. On that day, the moon may be seen in North, South, and Central America. On April 24, the moon can be seen in almost the whole world easily (See visibility curves).

The earliest reported sighting of the new crescent was on April 23 from Goodyear AZ, and San Diego CA.

April 23, 2020 (Thursday):

  • Afghanistan:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Engr M Ibrahim Mayar from Kabul reported: Upon the sunset at 6:30 pm local time on Thursday, April 23 ,2020 from my residence, I tried to see Ramadan Hilal for a half hour. However, Kabul western horizon was rather clear and the new moon could not be sighted.

  • Australia:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Falcon Raja from Sydney, NSW reported: On April 23, in Auburn Sydney NSW clouds started covering the horizon. Tried to observe the new moon untill 5:45pm Sydney time. I was unable to observe the new moon.

    2. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Shabbir Ahmed, President of Qubaa association of Western Sydney, NSW reported: Today (Thursday) 23rd of April 2020, the Hilaal of RAMADAAN 1441 has NOT been sighted anywhere in Australia. Therefore, the National Hilaal Committee members of Australia have declared that the month of RAMADAAN 1441 will begin from Saturday, 25th of April 2020.

  • Barbados:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Mohammed Patel from Bridgetown reported: Mohammed Patel reporting from Jama Masjid in Bridgetown, Barbados for Thursday 23rd April,2020. Crescent NOT SEEN. Therefore we have 30 days of Sha'ban .The first day of Ramadan will be on Saturday 25th April, 2020.

  • Brunei:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Mohammed Hussain Ahmad, Deputy Rector Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali Negara Brunei Darussalam reported: Brunei will begin fasting on Saturday, April 25, 2020 as the Ramadan crescent was not sighted at all designated locations on the evening of Thursday, April 23, 2020. By the command of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the Shariah High Court Judge, Yang Arif Haji Hassan Bin Haji Metali made the announcement on Radio Television Brunei that Ramadan will begin on Saturday, 25 April 2020.

  • Canada:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Shahid Rashid from Mississauga Ontaio reported: Today, Thursday April 23rd, 2020 there is no chance of sighting in Mississauga, ON Canada as per the calculations and visibility curve. And it is Maghrib time now and the sky is complete overcast all day. Therefore we cannot sight the moon in our town.

  • Chile:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Muhammad Sohail from Iquique reported: On April 23, tbe ramadan moon is not sighted any where in Chile. The first of ramadan will be on 25/04/2020 inshaAllah.

    2. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Fuad Musa from Santiago reported: Br. Fuad Musa from Santiago Chile reported the Hilaal for Ramadan 1441 AH was not seen in Chile, Argentina and Brazil, hence the first day of fasting will be Saturday, April 25th, 2020.

  • Colombia:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Ibrahim Herrera from Bogota reported: "On April 23rd two teams from the Hilal Sighting Colombia committee at rural areas near Bogot� were not able to see the moon. We are waiting for other semi-global reports (American continent)."

  • Egypt:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Hisham M. Hamed from Cairo reported: It is my pleasure to confirm that which we all knew beforehand. On Thursday, April 23rd, from Giza (30.00�N, 31.2�E) , Egypt, the Moon was NOT seen as expected.
      I and a number of my friends enjoyed watching the beautiful sunset, starting from around 18:21. Apparent sunset was at 18:32. Best time was about ten minutes later. Despite good visibility, we could see nothing, not even through 8x42 binoculars. At best time, the apparent lunar altitude was already below 2� above the horizon, and the sub-solar limb was 6.7 magnitudes/arecsecond2 below the threshold of visibility. Temperature, pressure and relative humidity were 27�C, 1010mB, and 38% respectively. The arc of vision at Moonset was ~4.7�. The illuminated Fraction of the Moon was: 0.003719 i.e 0.371872%. Moonlag was ~24 minutes.

  • Germany:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Khaled Shehab from Crailsheim reported: Today Thursday, 23.04.2020, I have 29 Shaban, and I can not see the Hilal today. Our local sunset time was 20.29. The sky was clear but it is not in the perfect condition.

  • Ghana:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Malik Salifu Shaban from Garu Bawku reported: On April 23, the crescent for Ramadan 1441 has not been sighted here in Garu in the upper east region of Ghana. Sighting effort was married by cloudy weather.

  • Guyana:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Muhammad Hafiz from Rose Hall Town, Berbice reported: The Hilaal for Ramadan 1441 AH was not sighted on April 23rd, 2020. The first day of fasting in Guyana will be Saturday, April 25th, 2020.

  • India:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Md Ohidullah from Birbhum, West Bengal reported: On Apeil 23, the Crescent moon of RAMADAN 1441 AH has not been sighted anywhere in BIRBHUM of WEST BENGAL, or any other State of INDIA, except KERALA reported to see on Thursday 23rd April 2020. Moonsighting.com thinks Kerala sighting is dubious.

    2. Seen: MCW member Mr Rasheed Usman, Kozhikode, Kerala reported: On April 23, the hilal of Ramadan is sighted by three persons at Kapad Beach Kozhikode, Kerala, India. The Ramadan 1 begins tomorrow Friday in Kerala. Moonsighting.com thinks Kerala sighting is dubious.

  • Indonesia:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr AR Sugeng Riyadi from Rowasiya Observatory reported: The new crescent of Ramadhan 1441 AH was NOT SIGHTED on Thursday, April23, 2020 from Assalaam Observatory, Pabelan Kartasura Sukoharjo Central Java Indonesia, the west sky was cloudy.
      The crescent observation for Ramadhan 1441 AH has been successfully held on Thursday April 23rd, 2020 (Shaban 29th, 1441 AH). The observation was closed for public amid to COVID-19 pandemic. The internal team member of Assalaam observatory started the observation at 17.00 Western Indonesian Time (UTC+7). All of the optical equipment were connected to the streaming device, for broadcasting via Youtube channel of PPMI Assalaam.
      The observation was led by the chair of the astronomy center at Assalaam, Mr. AR Sugeng Riyadi. A number of team member including Mr. Purnomo, Mr. Taufiq, Mrs. Aline, Mrs. Tri Ratna were helping the chair to handle the observation equipment. Two international guests, Mr. Sheikh Asyraf and Sheikh Hilal, both are Egyptian teachers, also attended the observation.
      We also receive the observation report from the external members of CASA. The summary of the observation results is presented in the following notes:
      1. Assalaam Observatory, Sukoharjo, Jawa Tengah, Indonesia. (AR Sugeng Riyadi, Purnomo, Taufiq Hidayat, Nanang Zaenuddin, Sirikit EU, Tri Ratna, Mila Rosyta, and Team). The crescent was not seen due to the cloudy sky.
      2. Tegalwero, Banyuwangi, Jawa Timur, Indonesia. (Amandaru). The crescent was not seen though the sky was clear. This might be due to the low altitude of the crescent (below 5�)
      3. Cilacap, Tanjungsari, Gunungsimping, Kec. Cilacap Tengah, Kabupaten Cilacap, Jawa Tengah , Indonesia (Naf'an A. Ramadhan ), The crescent was not seen due to the cloudy sky.
      4. Karanganyar, Kebumen, Jawa Tengah, Indonesia ( Rahediestu Muhammad Arkan), The crescent was not seen due to the cloudy sky.
      However, according to the ithbat council by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, 1 Ramadhan 1441 AH started on Friday, April 24th, 2020.

  • Kenya:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Ali Mohamed from Mombasa reported: As per the announcement by the Chief Kadhi of Kenya???? THE MOON HAS NOT BEEN SIGHTED. Therefore, tomorrow InshaAllah will be 30th Sha'ban. 1st Ramadhan 1441 will be on Saturday corresponding to 25th April 2020.

  • Maldives:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Asif Moosa Ibrahim from Kudahuvadhoo, Maldives reported: Today, April 23, moon was not seen in Kudahuvadhoo, Maldives.The crescent for Ramadan 1441, 2020 has not been sighted here in Garu in the upper east region of Ghana today Wednesday, 23th April, 2020. Sighting effort was married by cloudy weather.

  • Morocco:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Zakaria Guelzim from Rabat reported: Today Thursday April 23rd, I was not able to sight the hilal of Ramadan 1441 from Rabat due to clouds in the sunset direction. The Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs announced that the month of Ramadan 1441 will begin on Saturday, April 25, 2020. The following is the text of the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs communication:
      "The Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs informs the citizens that they tried to observe the crescent of the month of Ramadan 1441 AH, on Thursday, Shaban 29, corresponding to April 23, 2020. They contacted all endowments and Islamic affairs representatives in the Kingdom and the Royal Armed Forces units contributing to the observation of the Crescent, and they all assured that sighting was not proven. Accordingly, the month of Sha`ban will complete the thirtieth, and thus the month of Ramadan 1441 is the day after tomorrow, Saturday, April 25.

  • Namibia:

    1. Not Seen: Masjid Sunni Razvi Alkmaar, Netherlands reported: We from Holland have NOT seen the moon. Roeyate hilal comitt�e announced that the 1st Ramadan is on Saturdag 25 April.

  • New Zealand:


    1. Not Seen: FIANZ Hilal Committee from New Zeeland reported: We have received confirmation from the FIANZ Hilal Committee that the new moon of Ramadhan 1441H was not sighted on Last night, April 23.

  • Nigeria:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Wasiu Akewusola from Agege, Lagos reported: The crescent of the month of Ramadhan 144AH could not be sighted in Ikeja, Lagos-Nigeria tonight 23rd April, 2020. This may be due to the cloudy condition of the sky. Meanwhile, the Council of Islamic Affairs in Nigeria has already declared tomorrow as 1st Ramadhan due to information of moon that has been sighted in another area in Nigeria.

    2. Not Seen: Engineer Zaid Ibrahim from Okota, Lagos reported: The crescent of the month of Ramadhan 144AH could not be sighted in Okota, Lagos-Nigeria tonight 23rd April, 2020. This might be due to the slightly cloudy condition of the sky in the area. However, the Sultan of Sokoto and President of the National Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs in Nigeria declared tomorrow as 1st Ramadhan. He stated that he received information that the moon was sighted in another region of the country.

  • Saudi Arabia:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Abdul Kadir Mulla from Jeddah reported: On April 23, Moon not sighted in Jeddah KSA. Sky was clear. But i was unable to observe new moon.We waited till moon set time 7.08PM

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Nular Bary from Colombo reported: Today 29 Sha'ban 1441 (23rd. April 2020)Sri Lanka, cloudy evening Today, the moon set at 6:37Pm. and Sun Set at 6:19 Pm. the New Moon of Ramdan cannot be seen (naked eye) in Sri Lanka anyway its Sunnah to observe the new Moon on 29 day of every Hijri Month. So I went to my roof top to see the New Moon The western sky was cloudy but western horizon was clear I was there till 6:40 Pm. I couldn't see the Moon, Hence we'll complete Month of Sha'ban with 30days and start the Holy Month of Ramadan InShaAllah on April 25th.Saturday 2020. With the Dua for our Ummah to make this fast easy on this Holy Month Ramadan as the hole country is on look down due to Covid 19

The month of Shaaban will be complete 30 days. Saturday 25 April 2020 will be the 1st Ramadhan 1441 AH.

    2. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Omary Ngwali from Tiny Island of Zanzibar reported: The moon for the month of Ramadhan 1441 AH has not been sighted anywhere in Tanzania on 23rd April 2020. The month of Shaaban will be complete 30 days. Saturday 25 April 2020 will be the 1st Ramadhan 1441 AH.

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Umar Abdullah from Bon Accord, Tobago reported: Today, Thursday 23th April 2020, after sunset we looked for the new moon of Ramadhan 1414 AH. The moon was NOT SIGHTED. Therefore the month of Sha'baan would complete 30 days. Hence the 1st night of Ramadhan would be the night of Friday 24th April 2020 and the first day of Ramadhan would be Saturday 25th April 2020.     1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Tugrul �ekirdek from Intanbul reported: On April 23, the moon was not sighted in Istanbul, Turkey. Sky was clear. But I was unable to observe the new moon.

    2. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Muhammed Cevad Turan from Intanbul reported: There are two official announcements from Turkey:
      1. (Ankara) National Religious Affairs Office - Representing Ahl Sunnah population - (Diyanet Isleri Baskanligi) . Officially announced that 24 April 2020 is the 1st day of Ramadhan, based on calculations, they dont do observation.
      2. (Istanbul) Organization of Jafari Sect Cultural Affairs - Representing Shia Community - (CAFERIDER) Officially announced that 25th April 2020 will be 1st of Ramadhan. Even they do observation each year, because of Corona virus restrictions, it is forbidden to go out, so they waited for reports from continent of America, however there was no positive sighting report in same night, they declarated 24 April as the last day of Shaban.

  • Ukraine:

Not Seen: MCW member Mr Suleyman Hayrullayev and his assistant Mr Lenur Chaush from Kiev reported: On April 23, I, Sheyh Suleyman, mufti of Crimea (Ukraine) Sheyh Haydar and some other brothers together with observatory experts tried to sight the moon in Mayaki Observatory Center in south of Ukraine. Sunset at 16:57 UT, moonset at 17:15 UT, so we had just few minutes for observation. The moon age was 15 hrs. The sky was quite clean, we made all efforts to observe the moon with professional optical telescope and by naked eyes but unfortunately could not succeed.

    1. Not Seen: Mr Mir-Omar Ali from Raleigh, NC reported: On April 23, I Attempted Ru'yat e Hilal by climbing a wall on a hilly part. No Hilal was seen. It was cloudy.     2. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Javad Torabinejad from Blacksburg VA reported: This evening (Thursday, Apr 23, 2020), due to the presence of a total cloud cover, no sighting was possible in Blacksburg, VA (Lat: 37� 15' 40" N, Lng: 80� 26' 56" W, and elevation: 646 meters).

    3. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Khalil Homafar from Houston TX reported: On Thursday, April 23rd 2020, the Crescent was not sighted in Houston Texas. The sky and western horizon was clear. Sunset: 7:53 pm / Temp: 82�F / Humidity: 29% / Wind: 10 mph/ Visibility: 10 mi / Pressure: 29.75 "Hg / Dew Point: 47�F.

    4. Not Seen: Mr Rehan Saifullah from Houston TX reported: I looked for the new crescent of Ramadan in Houston, Texas, but did not see it. I went to a local park on a hill and been to look for the crescent at 7:53 pm CDT (285� NW) at sunset. I used a high-magnification camera and binoculars. I stayed until 8:25 pm CDT. Moonset was at 8:35 pm CDT (285� NW). I looked continuously but did not see the crescent.

    5. Seen: MCW member Manassas Muslim Association reported: Moon has been sighted in Goodyear AZ, and San Diego CA. InshaAllah tomorrow, Friday, 4/24/2020 will be the first day of Ramadan. Ramadan Mubarak! Please look at the MMA website (manassasmuslims.org) main page and event calendar for MMA programs during the month of Ramadan.

    6. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Faisal Ahmed from Bronx NY reported: Today 23rd April 2020 , I went to Pelham Bay Park ( Latitude: 40� 51' 2'' N , Longitude: 73� 49' 15.6'' W ) with my friends, and arrived at the place around 7:35 PM, the local sunset time was 7:46pm. The Sky was cloudy, we stayed at the place for an hour and tried to locate the crescent, but could not see the crescent with out bare eyes. The local moonset time was at 8:20 pm, and apparently we have to leave the place after the moonset. Today's Temperature, pressure and relative humidity were 44�F , 29.96inHg, and 63% respectively. The illuminated Fraction of the Moon was: 0.8% and Today's visibility was 2.5 miles. Moonlag was ~35 minutes.

    7. Not Seen: MCW member Imam Hamid Quraishi, Imam of Islamic Center of Winona (ICW) Winona MN reported: On April 23, we were unable to sight the Ramadan crescent moon due to the sky was cloudy in Winona, MN. However ICW announced the first day of Ramadan will be on April 24, 2020 based on available information.

Not Seen: MCW member Mr Mohamedraza H.Janmohamed from Sanford FL reported: The Moon-sighting Sub-committee wishes to inform the community that the new crescent has NOT been sighted on Thursday, April 23, 2020. Therefore, upon completion of 30 Days, SATURDAY, APRIL 25th , 2020 is thus established as the 1ST Day of Mahe Ramadhan Mubarak, 1441 AH

    9. Not Seen: MCW member Imam Bilal Huzair from Waterport NY reported: On April 23, I was unable to see the Hilal of Ramadhan 2020 due to precipitation and cloudy skies in Waterport, NY. Imam Bilal Huzair of Mesjid el Husein observed the skies with Br Sabir Aajan, Ayman Huzair, and Mohammad Mohimeer without any optical aid.

    10. Seen: MCW member Mr Mirza Shahid Basravi from Irvine CA reported: On April 23, I and four men and two women from Jafaria Islamic Society, saw the new crescent with binoculars only. None were able to see it with their bare eyes. The tips of the crescent were pointing to 3 oclock and 7 oclock.

    11. Seen: MCW member Mr Norm Vargas from San Gabriel CA reported: On April 23, the crescent was seen from San Gabriel, California with 10x42 binoculars only at 7:48 pm by Norm Vargas. The moon was about 3� above the local residential horizon and just above the rooftops of the homes across the street. It was seen for 8 minutes before it set into the trees and roofs. The horns were at 3 and 6 o'clock and the crescent had slightly brighter areas at 4 and 5 o'clock. It was not seen naked eye as the contrast was so low. The evening was warm and the horizon was hazy which delayed the sighting.

    12. Seen: MCW member Dr. Majid Nazim from Lake Charles, Louisiana reported: I have seen Cresecent moon in Lake Charles, Louisiana at around 8:22 pm. Moon set was 8:26 pm. I have to use Celestron 15x70 Binocular to spot it in twilight. Moon was at app 1�o clock-7�o clock position.

    1. Seen: MCW member Mr Abbas Aly, from Sydney, NSW reported: On April 24, The Moon was sighted at 5.52pm from Dural - Sydney NSW - Australia

    2. Seen: MCW member Imam Abul Qasim Rizvi, Imam Juma Melbourne reported: Alhumdulillah today on 24th April 2020, Crescent of the month of Ramadhan ul Mubarak 1441 AH has been sighted in Sydney, Canberra, and Brisbane Insha�Allah Saturday 25th April 2020 will be first Ramadhan ul Mubarak 1441 AH.

    3. Seen: MCW member Mr Moussa Khalife from Sydney, NSW reported: Today is Friday 24th of April 2020, we have sighted Ramadan crescent in Sydney Australia , the weather was clear so we kept watching the moon in the sky for almost 20 min. So tomorrow Saturday 25th of April is the 1st day of Ramadan 1441H.

  • Egypt:


    1. Seen: MCW member Dr Hisham M. Hamed from Cairo reported: On Friday, April 24th, from Giza (30.00�N, 31.2�E), Egypt, the Hilal of Ramadan was SEEN briefly at 19:04. I began my first attempt at apparent sunset, to no avail, and ten minutes thereafter, just after Maghrib prayers, again to no avail, due to thick clouds covering the western horizon. However, I noticed an opening between the clouds, at ~8� so I thought I'd try again when the Moon was at that altitude. I tried again at 17:03 and shortly afterwards, it showed up. But was obscured by the rest of the clouds about a minute or two later.

Seen: MCW member Mr AR Sugeng Riyadi from Rowasiya Observatory Central Java Indonesia reported: On Friday, April 24th, 2020 the new crescent of Ramadan 1441 AH was seen from Rowasiya Observatory at Bendo Ketitang Juwiring Klaten by myself with my son Ahmad Abdus Salam Aura Rusyda, and from Assalaam Observatory at Pabelan Kartasura Sukoharjo, Central Java Indonesia by Ust. Taufiq Hidayat, ust. Faizal Rabbani, Ust. Rusydi Hakim and Ust. Miftahul Firdaus. The sky was clear.

    1. Seen: MCW member Mr Muhammad Aamir, Vice Secretary Nepali Jame Masjid Committee, Kathmandu reported: The horizon was cloudy and hazy. Crescent was not sighted anywhere in Kathmandu but was sighted easily in the Terai region of Nepal, on Friday, 24-04-2020. So, on this basis, Darul Ifta wal qazaa, Nepali Jame Masjid announced that the month of Ramadan 1441 AH will begin from Saturday, 25th April 2020.

    1. Seen: MCW member Mr Sheik A.A. Ishola from Ikorodu, Lagos reported: Ramadan moon was easily with Naked eye on 24-04-2020 at area of IKORODU Lagos and My sheikh Habibullah Adam Al-Ilory called me that he saw the moon at Agege and the moon lasted for 1hr 11 minutes.

    1. Seen: MCW member Mr Ishmael Khan from Princes Town, Trinidad reported: We know from yesterday that the month of Sha�baan 1441 would have completed 30 days. Ttoday Friday 24 April 2020 after Maghrib the moon was seen. The crescent being 4:00 O�Clock to 8:00 O�Clock. It means therefore that tonight (24/04/2020) is the first night of Ramadhaan 1441. Tomorrow (25/04/2020) will be the first day InShaAllah.

    1. Seen: MCW member Dr Javad Torabinejad from Blacksburg VA reported: This evening (Friday, Apr 24, 2020), the crescent moon was sighted in Blacksburg, VA (Lat: 37� 15' 40" N, Lng: 80� 26' 56" W, and elevation: 646 meters). I arrived at my sighting location at 7:28 pm EDT (sunset: 8:05 pm). The western horizon was partly cloudy and hazy. Using a pair of binoculars (7X50), I started scanning the horizon. I sighted Venus at 7:31 pm with the pair of binoculars and then by naked eye at 7:33 pm. The first binocular sighting of the crescent moon was at 7:45 pm. At 8:06 pm, I could see the moon with naked eye. The horns were approximately at 2:30 and 7:30 O'clock (2:30;5:00;7:30). I left the area about an hour before moonset (moonset: 9:42 pm). At 6:55 pm, the temperature, dew point, relative humidity, and pressure were 58.0 F, 52.0 F, 80%, and 29.87 in, respectively.

Seen: MCW member Dr Faisal Ahmed from Bronx NY reported: Today 24th April 2020, I went to Pelham Bay Park ( Latitude: 40� 51' 2'' N , Longitude: 73� 49' 15.6'' W ) with two of my friends like before, and arrived at the place around 7:20 PM, the local sunset time was 7:45 pm. The Sky was clear here, the crescent was easily visible with bare eyes at 292� WNW. The local moonset time was at 9:22 pm. Today's Temperature, pressure and relative humidity were 48�F, 29.84 inHg, and 83% respectively. The moon was 2.6% illuminated and Today's visibility was 10 miles. Moonlag was 1 hour and 35 minutes, which allowed us to easily see the moon with bare eyes. 1441rmd
