The Astronomical New Moon is on Thursday, January 30, 2014 at 21:38 UT. Moon can not be seen on January 30, anywhere. On Friday, January 31, moon can be seen in parts of Europe, parts of Africa, parts of South America, and whole North America. On Saturday, February 1, the rest of the world can see the moon (See visibility curves).

Sighting Reports

The earliest reported naked eye sighting was on Friday, January 31, 2014 from Casablanca, Morocco. and earliest binocluar sighting was from Kuwait on the same day.

      REMARKS: In Kuwait on Friday 31 January 2014 I could see the crescent of Rabee II 1435 with 8 " Telescope and even with the 8X50 ViewFinder of the telescope. The Events went as follows:
      Sunset 17:25, First seen with telescope 17:26, First seen with viewfinder 17:45, last seen with viewfinder (approximately guessing):18:00, last seen with telescope: 18:05, moonset 18:15. This sighting is considered a record for our group regarding the Topocentreic age of 16H:53M(Geocentrric 16H:48 minutes) and it was an easy sighting even with the 8X50 and I assume that if there was no haze of oil wells smoke I could have seen the crescent even with naked eyes.

      FIRST DAY OF THE MONTH: Saturday, 1 February 2014 (Our goverment announced this even though hilal was not seen).
      REMARKS: Not seen either with telescope or with naked eye.
      Other places also give negative sighthing report.
      1. Pontian Kechil Beach, Pontian, Johor (01� 29' N , 103� 23' E), by Mr. Nur Faizal bin Kasri, Ms. Nuraina Fatimah bt Azman, and others. Sky clear and some part cloudy.
      2. Balai Cerap (Observatory House) at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (Skudai), Johor (01�28' N , 103�46' E), by Mr. Nik Mohd Ridzuan bin Nik Shaharuddin and Mr. Nik Mohd Firdaus bin Nik Zainal Abidin, sky clear and some part cloudy.
      3. Pantai Manis, Papar, Sabah (05� 45' N , 116� 0' E), by Mr. Muhammad Zainal Abiden bin Mohamad Hani, at 6.27 pm, sky clear but still can�t see the Hilal.

      FIRST DAY OF THE MONTH: The Colombo Grand Mosque Hilaal Committee unanimously declared to complete the month of Rabi-al-Awwal with 30 days and start the month of Rabi-al-Thani 1435H, on the 2nd February 2014.
      REMARKS: Today 29th.Rabi-al Awwal 1435H (31/01/2014) evening I couldn't trace a thing even with my binocular. The Moon's age was 15h.10m. & sets at 6:49pm.

      disappeared behind the clouds. Later at 6:47 pm, the crescent reappeared in another opening where I could see it with the naked eye. At this time it was about 1.5 degrees above the horizon.
