On June 24, more than a dozen brothers representing different Masjids from
across Metro Vancouver attempted a moonsighting. Imams and congregants representing British Columbia Muslim
Association, Masjid Al-Hidaya (Port Coquitlam), Ajyal Islamic Centre
(Vancouver), and myself representing 30 Masjids Project. We met one hour before Maghrib at the Gordon MacMillan Southam Observatory.
around 9:22 p.m. PDT.
Due to a software and mechanical issue with the Observatory's telescope we learned that they would not be able to position it in
time for an attempt within the window of time for a possible moonsighting between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m.
The astronomers on duty this evening were able to calculate that there was only a 1% chance for a possible moonsighting anyway, and
then only with telescopes. After a short shura, it was decided to drive to the nearest and highest point within the City of Vancouver, beside the Bloedel Conservatory in Queen Elizabeth Park. After praying Maghrib, we spent about 20 minutes searching for the
moon, both with our eyes, and with long lens cameras. Not one of us saw the moon.

I arrived at my sighting location around sunset (sunset: 8:46 pm EDT). The western horizon was partly cloudy. Using a pair of binoculars (7X50), I started scanning the horizon, hoping to see the crescent in the openings. After a few minutes, a friend of mine and his son joined me; he was using a pair of 10X50 binoculars. The first binocular sighting was at 9:06 pm. The crescent was very thin and by that time close to the horizon. The horns were at about 2:00 and 7:00 O'clock (2:00;4:30;7:00). We continued our sighting till 9:10 pm when the moon was no longer visible and perhaps setting behind the distant mountains (moonset: 9:21 pm). I did not try naked eye sighting since the time was very short and perhaps very difficult if not impossible to sight the crescent without binoculars.
