Al urjoonul qadeem of Shaban 1438: January 27 & January 26, 2017 New Crescent Moon of Ramadan 1438:

The Astronomical New Moon (conjunction) is on Thursday May 25, 2017 at 19:44 UT. On May 25, the moon cannot be seen anywhere in the world. On May 26, the moon can be seen with difficulty in South-East Asia, but can easily be seen in Africa and Americas (See visibility curves). On May 27, the moon can be easily seen in the rest of the world.

    1. Conjunction is the basis: Irshad Sait, Chief Editor, Hijri Committee of India from KOZHIKODE, India reported: The members of Hijri Committee of India have started 1st day's fast of Ramadan on Friday (not because of moon sighting) but because the Conjunction occurred on Thursday at 19:44 UT.

  • Nigeria:

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Abbas Aly from Imam Hasan Centre, Annangrove NSW reported: On 26th May 2017 (Friday), the moon was not sighted. 1st day of Ramadhan will be Sunday 28th May 2017 Ramadhan Mubarak

    2. Not Seen: MCW member Engr Manzoor A Mian from Melbourne, VIC reported: Crescent is not sighted today 26/5/17, Friday anywhere in Australia. It is announced that 1st of Ramadan will start on Sunday 28/5/17.

    3. Not Seen: MCW member Imam Abul Qasim Rizvi, Imam Juma Melbourne reported: Moon was not sighted anywhere in Australia (Melbourne,Sydney,Brisbane and Canberra) Therefore tomorrow Saturday 27th May will be the 30th of Shaban inshallah Sunday 28th May will be the 1st Ramadhan Ul Mubarak 1438.

    4. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Shabbir Ahmed, President of Qubaa association of Western Sydney, NSW reported: Today is Friday 26th of May. The Hilaal of RAMADAAN 1438 has NOT been sighted anywhere in Australia. Therefore, the month of RAMADAAN will commence from Sunday 28th of May 2017.

    5. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Moussa Khalife from Sydney, NSW reported: We didn't sight the moon today even with the binoculars. We kept looking for more than half an hour but unfortunately the moon was not sighted. So tomorrow Saturday 27th of May will be 30th of Shaaban 1438H.

    6. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Muhammad Khatree, Brisbane, QL reported: For Friday 26 May, conditions were ideal for sighting the hilal for Ramadan. The sky was clear with very little cloud cover. However the moon was too young, and it was not sighted in Brisbane.

  • Barbados:

    1. Seen: MCW member Mr Mohammed Patel from Jama Masjid in Bridgetown reported: Today, Friday 26th May, 2017, the crescent was clearly SEEN (approx. at 6:48 p.m.). We had 29 days of Sha'ban. Insha'Allah, the 1st of Ramadan will be on Saturday 27th May, 2017. Here is the photograph. Click on the picture on the right to see full size.

  • Canada:

    1. Not Seen, but seen in Eastern locations: Mr Shahid Rashid from Mississauga, Ontario reported: Now on May 26, it is few minutes to Maghrib time in Mississauga, ON. Our skies are completely covered by the clouds and there is no chance for sighting the moon. Based on confirmed sighting reports from multiple eastern locations, our local Masjid has announced 1st of of Ramadan tomorrow. May 27 (Saturday).

    2. Seen: MCW member Mr HiMY SYeD from Vanvouver, BC reported: On Friday Evening, May 26 2017, I joined with Ajyal Islamic Centre's Moonsighting Group, Brothers Zachariah, Ali, Omar, to search for the new Ramadan Moon. The four of us travelled to Burnaby Mountain Park, highest unobstructed point in Metro Vancouver. Local Sunset Time was 9:03 p.m. There was haze on the horizon, with horizontal threads of clouds. We paired off and searched for the new moon from two different points on Burnaby Mountain. After 20 minutes of searching to no avail we regrouped.
      Just as we were about to give up, Brother Ali spotted the extremely thin new crescent. It took time for the rest of us to easily see it. An airplane flew past where the new crescent was visible. (The plane helped us all to then easily keep the new moon in view.) Alhumdulillah, we were all able to eventually see this extremely thin new crescent moon. We spent about 20 minutes taking photographs, trying to capture some photos. Here is one.   • Chile:

    1. Seen: MCW member Mr Muhammad Sohail from Iquique reported: The moon has been seen at 18:35 on May 26 (Friday). First of Ramadan in chile is tomorrow, May 27 (Saturday).

  • Colombia:

    1. Not Seen (Clouds): Mr Victor Nasser Suraez from Bogota reported: We would like to inform that the crescent was not seen on May 26 (Friday) by our Hilal Sighting delegation due to weather issues, but we locally declared Ramadan to begin last night based on reports made by Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago, Peru, Chile and the US.

  • Egypt:

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Hisham M. Hamed from Cairo reported: On Friday, May 26th, From 6th October City, 29.989922N,30.977140E, some 0.22� of Longitude west of Giza, Egypt, at ~200m above sea level. The masjid was just next to the observation point. This area has much better visibility than the Nile valley, in general. Apparent sunset was at 18:49. There was no sign of the Crescent at that time. The Sun reached a solar depression of 5� at ~19:10, by which time my colleague and I had returned from Maghrib prayer. I then began my observation, knowing that the subsolar limb of the Crescent, i.e it's brightest point was already lower than 3.6�.
      Despite excellent visibility, and low humidity(~16%), there was NO sign of the Crescent. Temperature was ~34�C, pressure was 1010mb. I ended the attempt at ~19:20.

  • Ghana:

    1. Seen: MCW member Mr Baba Abdulai from Tamale reported: Date of sighting is Friday May 26, 2017. The crescent was seen by other people in other places. Confirmed reports came from Zabzugu, Saboba and Bawku. I was speaking on phone to my friend Musah Inusah (a voluntary staff of the Bawku Agric. Office) around 18:42 local time when suddenly he sighted the moon over there in Bawku. He started calling other people to come and see the crescent. Just before completing the report, my uncle Abdul Karim also called me at 18:54 from Yemo-Karaga Yapala, confirming that he too had seen it.

    2. Seen: MCW member Mr Malik Salifu Shaban from Garu Bawku reported: The crescent for Ramadan was seen today at Kugrago a suburb of Garu in the Upper East Region of Ghana at 6:30 local time. I was phoned in by Malam Ilyasu, Imam of Kugrago, in Garu. He said all members of the community saw the crescent. Sighting was also confirmed at Sabon Gari, a sector of Garu. The chief Imam of Ghana, Shaikh Nuhu Sharubtu had earlier announced Saturday 27th May 2017 to be the commencement of Ramadan. So Ghana observes fasting on Saturday inshaaAllah.

  • Guyana:

    1. Seen: MCW member Mr Fazal Mahmood from Corriverton, Berbice reported: The Central Moon Sighting Committee of Guyana (CMSCG) has declared the 1st of Ramadhaan 1438 AH to be on Saturday, 27th May, 2017 The new crescent for the Islamic lunar month of Ramadhaan 1438 AH was sighted on the evening of Friday, 27th May, 2017/ 29th Shabaan 1438 AH. Ramadhaan Mubarak !

    2. Seen: MCW member Dr Muhammad Hafiz from Rose Hall Town, Berbice reported: The members of Rose Hall Town Masjid, Guyana easily observe the Hilaal on Friday, 26th May 2017 for Ramadan 1438 AH after sunset (6:22 PM Guyana Time). The moon was also observed in several Muslim Communities throughout Guyana, hence the first day of fasting will commence on Saturday, 27th May 2017.

  • India:

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Abdunnafi' Qasimi (Aalim) from Chennai reported: On May 26, 2017, Friday, in Tamil Nadu, the moon was not sighted. Qazi of Tamil Nadu Salahuddin Ayyubi announced that Ramadan begins on Sunday, May 28, 2017

    2. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Yusuf Idara from New Delhi reported: Today Friday 26-May-2017 = 29-Shaabaan-1438 Hijri, the moon of Ramadan-1438 hijri was not sighted. I tried to see the moon at my home from 07:00 pm to 07:30 pm but the moon was not sighted because horizon was too cloudy. Kanpur Rooyat Hilal Committee officially declared that moon was not sighted, therefore, Ramadan will start on Sunday, May 28.

    3. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Siddik Nadvi (Nida-e-Haram), from Ahmedabad, Gujrat reported: Today Friday 26th May , 2017 = 29 Shaban 1438 Hijri, we tried to see the crescent of Ramdan 1438 Hijri at our Institute JAMIA KANZUL ULOOM at 6.25 pm to 7.00. The crescent was not seen.

    4. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Molvi Iqbalhusen Bokda from Godhra, Gujrat reported: Moon for Ramadan was not seen today on 26th May 2017 (29th Sha'ababn) here at Godhra. Sky was clear. Friends from different places gave negative sighting report. All Hilal committees including Imarate Shariya Bihar, Delhi, Bhopal, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad declared that it will be 30th Sha'aban tomorrow on 27th May. Ramadan will start on 28th May all over India.

  • Indonesia:

    1. Not Seen, but seen by CCD Imaging: MCW member Mr AR Sugeng Riyadi from Rowasiya Observatory at Bendo Ketitang Juwiring Klaten Central Java reported: The New (Waxing) Crescent of Ramadhan 1437AH was NOT SEEN on Friday, 26 May 2017 from Rowasiya Observatory at Bendo Ketitang Juwiring Klaten Central Java Indonesia. This event was attend by Team of Rowasiya and Kaukaba, and members of Solo Astro Club. However, the new crescent of Ramadhan 1438 AH was seen by CCD from Banten West Java by Team of LAPAN. The Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia in the Sidang Isbath decided that Ramadhan 1st, 1438 A.H starts on Saturday, May 27th, 2017.

  • Kenya:

    1. Seen: Mr Hussein A Hussein from Mombasa reported: Alhamdulillah the moon has been sighted in Mombasa, Lamu, and almost all parts of Kenya today, May 26 (Friday). Tommorrow its first of Ramadhan and the cheif kadhi has declared so.

    2. Seen: MCW member Mr Mahmood Essa from Mombasa reported: I am happy to let you know that we were able to sight the crescent this evening, Friday 26/05/2017 and thus In sha Allaah, tomorrow, Saturday 27/05/2017 will be our first day of Ramadhan. I take this opportunity in wishing all Muslims , a Blessed, Healthy and Happy Ramadhan.

  • Lebanon:

    1. Seen w/Binoculars: MCW member Dr Hadi Jaafar from Lebanon reported: I have just seen the moon with a pair of 7*50 binoculars this evening May 26th 2017 in Beirut, Lebanon. First sighting was at 8:00 PM at around 295 degrees from magnetic north. Moon horns between 1 and 6, extremely thin. Despite many attempts, I could not see it with the naked eye. Little haze on the western horizon. Watched it using the binoculars for around 15 minutes, trying to take some photos of it using Nikon SLR, before it faded away behind the red haze. Camera sensor could not capture it. So beautiful. Ramadan Kareem.

      The Juristic Office at the Institution of the late Religious Authority, His Eminence, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah (ra) issued a statement in which it declared that Saturday, May 27, 2017 is the first of the month of Ramadan 1438 H., according to the jurisprudential opinion of the late Religious Authority, His Eminence, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah (ra).

  • Libya:

    1. Seen: MCW member Dr Nuri Alfasi reported: The Ifta authority of Libya in the capital Tripoli made an official announcement that Ramadan crescent confirmed seen in Libya on Friday 26th May 2017, therefore Saturday 27 May is the first day of Ramadan 1438 H.

  • Mauritius:

    1. Seen: MCW member Mr Nissar Ahmad Ramtoola from Port Louis reported: Moon has been sighted in Mauritius tonight Friday 26 May 2017 hence 1st day of Ramadan will be Saturday 27 May 2017. First reported visibility was at St Martin on the west at 6.03pm. Sunset was at 17.38pm and Moonset at 18.29pm. Sky was practically clear with few patches of Clouds.

  • Morocco:

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Ehsan H. Hajar from Casablanca reported: On May 26, 2017 (Friday) Meteorological conditions in Casablanca Morocco were not favorable for any sighting, sky was obscured by heavy clouds for the past few days. I was unable to spot any lighted object in the western sky. Habous ministry has announced that Ramadan crescent was seen and tomorrow Saturday will begin Ramadan.

    2. Seen: MCW member Mr Khalid Chraibi from Casablanca reported: I'm pleased to inform you that the Moroccan authorities have announced on Friday evening that the crescent of Ramadan had been observed. The month of ramadan therefore begins on Saturday May 27, 2017.

    3. Seen by others: MCW member Mr Zakaria Guelzim from Rabat reported: I was not able to sight the new moon of Ramadan today 26-May, because of heavy clouds in the sky of Rabat. In a statement, the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs of Morocco said that the observation of the crescent of the month of Ramadan 1438de AH, was confirmed in the evening of Friday 29 Chaaban 1438 corresponding to 26 May 2017 . On this, 1 Ramadan 1438 AH corresponds to Saturday, May 27, 2017

    1. Seen: MCW member Mr Ahmed Mohamed Barakah from Windhoek reported: on May 26 (Friday) Moon was sighted in numerous areas of windhoek. Ramadaan MI'm pleased to inform you that the Moroccan authorities have announced on Friday evening that the crescent of Ramadan had been observed.   • Nepal:

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Muhammad Aamir, Vice Secretary Nepali Jame Masjid Committee, Kathmandu reported: I was there to sight Ramadan crescent on Friday evening at 6:30 pm, half an hour before sunset along with few other reliable Muslims. We were trying to see the moon until 7:30 pm but were unable to see the moon. Even we didn�t get any sighting report from around the whole Nepal. So, Sunday 28th May 2017 has been declared as the first day of Ramadan 2017 in Nepal.

  • New Zealand:

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Wajid Hussain from Palmerston North reported: The Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ) has announced that the moon of the month of Ramadan HAS NOT BEEN sighted today. Therefore "The First day of Ramadan will be Sunday the 28 of May" Inshallah.

  • Nigeria:

    1. Seen: MCW member Dr Ismaila I. Ahmed from Osi, Kwara State reported: The Hilal of Ramadhan was sighted tonight, 26/05/2017 at Ilorin, Kwara state, Nigeria at about 7.30pm local time.

  • Pakistan:

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Ismail Dehwar from Balochistan reported: On evening on 26th May it was officially announced by Markazi Ru'wait-e-Hilal committee that across the country moon was not sighted, thus 1st Ramdan will be on Sunday 28th May 2017.

  • Peru:

    1. Seen: MCW member Mr Muhammad Shaiman Shafiq from Arequipa, Peru reported: I AM giving the witness of moon sighting for the month of Ramadan 1438 AH by reciting the Kalima e Tayyaba according to the Sunnah of Prophet [LA ILAHA ILLALLAH MUHAMMADUR RASOOL ALLAH], I bear witness that I have sighted the moon of the islamc month of Ramadan 1438 AH, after maghrib today on May 26, 2017 the Friday at between 17:45 to 17:50 here in Arequipa, PERU (South America).   • Saudi Arabia:

    1. Not Seen, but Officially announced Ramadan begins May 27 (Saturday): MCW member Mr Khurram Imtiaz from Riyadh reported: I tried to find out Ramzan ul mubarik moon nearly in center of Riyadh KSA. Weather condition was not very clear so unable to find creasent of Ramdan. But as per official annoucement of KSA, tomorrow 27 May 2017, will be first Ramzan.

    2. Not Seen: MCW memberDr Ayyub Patel from Taif reported: We were on the way to Makkah coming from south Abha Tihama mountain Road. While close to Taif we tried to sight the hilal crescent moon for Ramadan but due to clouds we could not see it.

  • Senegal:

    1. Seen: Mr Niang Salim from Dakar reported: The official information about Senegal beginning the Holy month of Ramadan 1438 was issued that Ramadan begins on Saturday, 27 May 2017. by the CONACOC �The National Commission of Moon Sighting" on National Radio & TV (RTS) & Public Media (WebNews).

  • South Africa:

    1. Seen: MCW member Mr Rashid Motala from Durban reported: On the evening of Friday 26th May 2017, the Hilaal WAS sighted in South Africa (many locations). Therefore Ramadaan 1438 will commence on Saturday, 27th May 2017 in South Africa. Ramadaan Mubaruk to all.

    2. Seen: MCW member Dr Abdurrazak Ebrahim from Cape Town reported: Ramadan Hilaal sighted by naked-eye this Friday (26/5/17) evening in Cape Town at 16:18 LT (sunset 15:47). The 1st day of the Holy month of Ramadan will correspond with the Gregorian 27 May 2017.

  • Spain:

    1. Not Seen but Official Announcement is Seen: MCW member Mr Gabriel Jairod�n Riaza from Madrid reported: The moon was not seen by naked eye on Friday 26 May 2017, with the horizon mostly cloudy. Announcement: The Islamic Commission of Spain announces that Saturday, 27 May 2017, is the first day of the holy month Ramadan 1438.

  • Sri Lanka:

    1. Seen: MCW member Mr Mohamed Shakir from Galle reported: On May 26, Friday the horizon was mostly cloudy and the new moon was not sighted by us today. But according All Ceylon Jamiyathul Ullama the Hilaal (Crescent) for the Month of Ramadhaan 1438 HAS BEEN SIGHTED. Therefore tomorrow will be the 1st day of Ramadhan 1438 in Srilanka. This is exactly as is calculated by us that you can see in the visibility curve.

    2. Seen: MCW member Mr Abdurrrahman Razeen from Colombo reported: Today 26-05-2017CE=29-08-1438AH is the sighting day for the month of Ramadan 1438AH in Srilanka. I was in Colombo Grand Mosque.The sky was totally cloudy in Colombo. The parameters at Colombo are Sun set:6:20pm. Moon set:7:01pm. Lag=41minutes. The prediction of the astronomers=Crescent can be sighted if the atmosphere is clear.
      Hilaal sighting groups was arranged right round the country. A positive sighting report from one of the sighting group was recieved to CGM Hilaal Committee which is situated east coast called Nilaveli. The coordination is Lat-8d 41" Long 81d 11". sunset=6:17pm, Moonsighted at 6:35pm. The orientation was 3-7 o'clock.
      The crescent was sighted by Moulavi Muaad, Bro. Ramzeen and Bro.Rafeeq. All 3 of them are frequent sighters for the last 2 years. According to my experience this sighting is doubtful but we have to accept it due for their consistent effort in moonsighting every month and their info was almost equal to the parameters. Hence it was decided at the Hilaal Committee conference at CGM which was presided by the CGMH Committee Deputy president Moulana Abdul Hameed (Bahji) along with ACJU and MRCA to complete the proceeding month as 29 days and start the month of Ramadan on 27-5-2017CE.

  • Tanzania:

    1. Seen: MCW member Mr Hamza Rijal from Zanzibar reported: The Hilaal for Ramadaan was sighted this evening in Pemba sister island of Unguja at the place called Magumashi Mawe Matatu. The official first day of Ramadhan 1438 AH will correspond with Saturday, 27 May, 2017 in all part of East Africa; include Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.

  • Trinidad and Tobago:

    1. Seen: MCW member Umar Abdullah from Bon Accord, Tobago reported: The crescent moon to commence the month of Ramadhaan 1438 AH was looked for after the sunset of Friday 26th May 2017. Reports from all committees locally and regionally, confirm that the moon was SIGHTED. All reports has declared that the month of Sha�baan 1438 AH has completed 29 days. Therefore, the 1st night of Ramadhaan 1438 AH and Taraaweeh will be the night of Friday 26th May 2017 and the first day of Ramadhaan 1438 AH will be the day of Saturday 27th May 2017.

    2. Seen: MCW member Mr Ishmael Khan from Princes Town, Trinidad reported: The crescent for Ramadhaan 1438 was seen by many brothers immediately after Maghrib on the night of Friday 26th May 2017. The crescent was from 3:00 o'clock to 7:00 o' clock. Saturday May 27th 2017 is therefore the 1st day of Ramadhaan 1438. Ramadhaan Kareem to all our brothers and sisters all over the world and congratulations on seeing another Ramadhaan.

  • UK:

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mrs Jamilah Amal from Liverpool reported: On May 26 (Friday) the hilal was not sighted by naked eye. I observed horizon which was hazy and partly cloudy from approximately 21:27 to 22:00. Observation location Queens Dock, Liverpool Waterfront, Liverpool, U.K.

    2. Not Seen but Accepted Morocco sighting: MCW member Qamar Uddin from York reported: The Hilal of Ramadan was not seen in York (UK) on Friday 26/5/2017, but we did receive a positive sighting report fax from Morocco at 9.25 pm BST, Alhamdulillah.

  • USA:

    1. Seen: MCW member Mr Mohamedraza H.Janmohamed from Sanford FL reported: The Moon-sighting Sub-committee wishes to inform the community that the new crescent for Mahe Ramadhan was sighted in Orlando, FL, as well as many other cities on Friday, May 26, 2017. Therefore, SATURDAY, MAY 27th , 2017 is established as the 1ST Day of Mahe Ramadhan 1438 AH.

    2. Seen: The Moon-Sighting Committee of the Council of Shia Muslim Scholars in North America announceD: Saturday, May 27th, 2017, will be the first day of the Holy Month of Ramadhan, 1438 A.H. for the entire region of North America. This determination is based on the fact that there WERE verified sightings of the crescent moon by the naked eye at sunset on Friday, May 26th, 2017, from many locations.

    3. Not Seen: MCW member Imam Hamid Quraishi Imam Islamic Center of Winona (ICW) Winona MN reported: On May 26, 2017, Friday, in Winona, MN, USA, the crescent of Ramadan 1438 was not visible with naked eye due to scattered cloudy condition. ICW has determined that Saturday, 27 May 2017, will be the first day of holy month of Ramadan 1438based on sighting else where in the country.

    4. Seen: MCW member Dr Javad Torabinejad from Blacksburg VA reported: This evening (Friday, May 26), the crescent moon was sighted in Blacksburg, VA (Lat: 37� 15' 40" N, Lng: 80� 26' 56" W, and elevation: 646 meters). I arrived at my sighting location (the Blacksburg Middle School) at 7:19 pm EDT (sunset: 8:32 pm). The western horizon was clear with a few passing clouds. Using a pair of binoculars (7X50), I started scanning the horizon, hoping to see the crescent prior to sunset. That did not happen. Later, a friend joined me; he was using a pair of 10X50 binoculars. The first binocular sighting was at 8:36 pm followed by the first naked eye sighting at 8:40 pm. The crescent was thin but easy to spot. The horns were at 1:30 and 6:30 O'clock (1:30;4:00;6:30). We left our sighting location for another place. We continued our sighting there till 9:14 pm when we left for home. At that time the moon was still about 2 degrees above the horizon (moonset: 9:35 pm). At 8:35 pm, the temperature, dew point, relative humidity, and pressure were 66.4 F, 51.8 F, 59%, and 30.00 in, respectively. Click on the picture on the right to see full size.
