New Crescent Moon of Rabi-at-Thani 1442:
The Astronomical New Moon (conjunction) is on November 15, 2020 (Sunday) at 5:07 UT.
On November 15, the moon can be seen with difficulty in Western South America, and easily in Polynesian Islands. On November 16, the moon can be seen in almost the whole world (See visibility curves).

The earliest reported sighting of the new crescent was on Sunday, November 15 from San Gabriel CA. USA.

November 15, 2020 (Sunday):

  • Indonesia:

Not Seen: MCW member AR Sugeng Riyadi from Rowasiya Observatory Central Java Indonesia reported: The new crescent of Rabiul Tsani 1442 was not sighted on Sunday, November 15, 2020 from Assalaam Observatory at PPMI Assalaam Pabelan Kartasura Sukoharjo Surakarta Central Java and from all locations in Indonesia. The sky was cloudy and partly hazy.

  • Kenya:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Muhammad Abubakar Said from Mombasa reported: The weather condition was good and mostly clear. Today Sunday 15th November 2020/29th Rabi-al Awwal, I was not able to see the crecsent for Rabi-al Thani. So tomorrow Monday 16th of November is 30th Rabi-al Awwal and Tuesday 17th of November will be 1st of Rabi-al Thani.

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Nissar Ahmad Ramtoola from Port Louis reported: The New Moon has NOT BEEN SIGHTED in Mauritius on Sunday night 15 November 2020. Hence Monday 16 November will the 30th day of Rabi Ul Awwal and Tuesday 17 November will be the 1st day of Rabi Ul Thani 1442. Sky was mostly cloudy. Sunset was at 6.27pm and Moonset was at 6.47pm.

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Oyeyemi Oyewo, Ilorin, Kwara State reported: I look for new crescent of Rabiul Thanni 2022 on Nov 15 in Lagos Nigeria. I searched for it between 6:20pm and 6:50pm local time. I don't see the new moon.

    2. Not Seen: MCW member HabibuRahman Yunus, Yola, Adamawa State reported: The weather was clear but I couldn't sight the new crescent moon for the Month of Rabi al-Thani 1442 today (15th Nov., 2020) here in my location Aliyu Musdafa College, Yola, Nigeria.

    3. Not Seen: MCW member Wasiu Akewusola from Agege, Lagos reported: On November 15, the crescent of the month of Rabi'u l Thanni 1442AH could not be sited in Ikeja, Lagos State, Nigeria up till 19.05hrs local time. The sky was not so clear with clouds.

  • South Africa:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Rashid Motala from Durban reported: On the evening of Sunday 15 November 2020, the Hilaal was NOT sighted in South Africa. Therefore Rabi-us-Thaani 1442 will commence on Tuesday, 17 November 2020 in South Africa.

  • Tanzania:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Hamza Rijal from Tiny Island of Zanzibar reported: No sighting on 15th November 2020. We shall complete 30 days for Rabiul Awal in tiny Island of Zanzibar, In sha Allah Tuesday 17th of November 2020, we expect to be the first day of Rabiul Thani 1442 AH.

  • Trinidad and Tobago:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Umar Abdullah from Bon Accord, Tobago reported: Today, Sunday, 15th November 2020, after sunset we looked for the new moon of Rabi'uth Thaanii 1442 AH. The moon was NOT SIGHTED. Therefore the month of Rabi'ul Awwal, 1442 would complete 30 days. Hence the 1st night of Rabi'uth Thaanii 1442 would be the night of Monday 16th November 2020 and the first day of Rabi'uth Thaanii 1442 would be Tuesday 17th November 2020.

  • USA:


    1. Seen: MCW member Norm Vargas from San Gabriel CA reported: On Sunday, November 15, the crescent moon was sighted tonight after sunset with 10x42 binoculars. It was first sighted at 5:06 pm above the roofs of houses in my neighborhood. The arc was facing the 4:30 position and extended about 60�. It had two bright areas near the center of the arc. It was NOT seen naked eye as the contrast never improved against the sky. It was followed until 5:18 when it settled into the houses about 100 yards away. Temperature was 73�, humidity was 26% and the sky was clear, but slightly hazy and orange in the glow of sunset.

    2. Not Seen: Council of Shia Muslim Scholars in North America announced: The Moon-Sighting Committee of the Council of Shia Muslim Scholars of North America announces that Monday, November 16th, 2020 will be the last day of the month of Rabi al-Awwal, 1442 A.H. and that Tuesday, November 17th, 2020 will be the first day of the month of Rabi al-Akhir, 1442 A.H. for the entire region of North America.
      This determination is based on the fact that there were no verified sightings of the crescent moon by the naked eye at sunset on Sunday, November 15th, 2020, in any region of North America.

    3. Not Seen: MCW member Mohamedraza H.Janmohamed from Sanford FL reported: The Moon-sighting Sub-committee wishes to inform the community that there was no sighting of the new crescent on Sunday, November 15, 2020. Therefore upon completion of 30 Days of Mahe Rabi-ul-Awwal, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2020 is established as the 1st Day of Mahe Rabi-ul-Aakher, 1442 AH.

    1. Seen: MCW member Dr Shabbir Ahmed, President of Qubaa association of Western Sydney, NSW reported: Today (Monday) 16th of November 2020, the Hilal of RABI �UL THAANI 1442 has been sighted in Brisbane. Therefore, the month of RABI �UL THAANI 1442 will begin from Tuesday, 17th November 2020.

    2. Seen: MCW member Abul Qasim Rizvi, Imam Juma Melbourne reported: Moon has been sighted in Brisbane Australia In�Sha�Allah tomorrow Tuesday 17th November will be the First of Rabiul Thani 1442 AH.

  • Bangladesh:


    1. Seen: Sheikh Azizul Hakim from Dhaka reported: On ember 16, I saw the moon from Demra, Dhaka, Bangladesh, at 5:36 pm. The hotns were from 3-6 O'clock.

  • Egypt:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Hisham M. Hamed from Cairo reported: I attempted to observe the Hill of Rabi'elAkhir tonight, Monday, Nov 16th, from Ma'adi (29.96�N, 31.25�E), South Cairo. At apparent sunset, 16:58, there was no sign of the Hilal. Just after Maghreb prayers, it was obscured by clouds covering the lower 8� above the horizon. This condition persisted, and my attempt was as inconclusive as it was futile.

  • Ghana:


    1. Seen: MCW member Malik Salifu Shaban from Garu Bawku reported: The crescent for RABI �UL THAANI 1442 has been sighted in Garu in the upper rast region of Ghana today (Monday) 16th of November 2020 at 17:35 local time. Therefore, the month of RABI �UL THAANI 1442 will begin from Tuesday, 17th November 2020. I saw the crescent which was clear and high for everyone to see it.

Seen: MCW Member Zaid Duch from Nadiad, Gujrat reported: I, Zaid Duch, sighted the crescent moon (Hilal) of 1st day of Rabiul-Aakhar 1442; today on Monday, 16th of November 2020 (29 Rabiul Awwal 1442); at location Navi Masjid, Nadiad, Gujarat, India.     2. Seen: MCW member Yusuf Idara from New Delhi reported: Moon was sighted Monday, November 16. Tuesday, 17th November, will be 1st Rabi at-Thani, 1442 Hijri.

Today, Monday I have 30 Rabia Alawel I saw it easly the Hilal at 18.20 by naked eyes with my brother Aba Alaali Shehab. Our local sunset time was 18.05 The sky was clear.

    1. Seen: MCW member Dr Ayyub Patel from Abha reported: On November 16, Local sunset was 17:32. Soon after I saw the crescent only for a few minutes with binoculars celestron 20x80. The crescent disappeared behind a massive cloud. As it was setting, it reappeared after around 50 min and a picture is attached. Click on the photo on right to see full size.

  • USA:


    1. Seen: MCW member Dr Javad Torabinejad from Blacksburg VA reported: Today (Monday, November 16, 2020), the crescent moon was sighted in Blacksburg, VA (Lat: 37� 15' 40" N, Lng: 80� 26' 56" W, and elevation: 646 meters). Using a pair of binoculars (7X50), I sighted the crescent at 1:39 pm EST. I tried to see the moon with naked eye with no success. It was clear but hazy. At 1:35 pm, the temperature, dew point, relative humidity, and pressure were 52.0 F, 21.0 F, 30%, and 30.16 in, respectively.
      Later today, I sighted the moon with naked eye. I arrived at my sighting location at 5:01 pm (sunset: 5:12 pm). The western horizon was clear and hazy. Using the same pair of binoculars, I started scanning the horizon. My first binocular sighting was at 5:03 pm followed by naked eye sighting at 5:05 pm. The horns were approximately at 2:00 and 7:00 O'clock (2:00;4:30;7:00). Soon, I left for other places to take pictures. I left my last sighting location at 6:21 pm while the moon was about to set (moonset: 6:34 pm). At 5:15 pm, the temperature, dew point, relative humidity, and pressure were 48.0 F, 17.0 F, 29%, and 30.15 in, respectively.
