The Astronomical New Moon (conjunction) is on Saturday June 24, 2017 at 2:31 UT. On June 24, the moon can be seen with difficulty in Chile and other countries in South and Central America. On June 24, good possibility of sighting is in Peru, Ecuador, Hawaii and Polynesian Islands. On June 25, the moon can be seen easily in the whole world (See visibility curves).

The earliest authentic sighting of the new crescent by naked eye was from from MCW Member, Muhammad Sohail, Iquique Chile. Saudi Arabia officially announced Eid on June 25,2017 (Sunday), without saying that the moon was sighted.

On June 24 countries like Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia announced That Eid is Sunday, June 25. What most people in the world don't understand that none of these country's Official Announcement mentioned moon has been sighted. People are asking Moonsighting.com, "Is your data incorrect or are the official announcements incorrect? Could you please elaborate?". The answer is that none of these country's Official Announcement mentioned moon has been sighted. Newspapers have reported these announcements in their own words that moon has been sighted, which is incorrect.

Click on the photo on the left to see full size. We have new info from an Astronomical Obsevatory in Tumair, Saudi Arabia with a photo of very thin Hilal taken by telescope.

Moonsighting.com concluded that the photo on left turned out to be fake. The same conclusion was reached by scientists, astronomers and experienced sighters from different parts of the world and is probably created by some one who is like one of those peoples from the town of Sudear, Shaqra, etc. who have reported sightings in the past even when the moon had set before sunset.

We met one hour before Maghrib at the Gordon MacMillan Southam Observatory. around 9:22 p.m. PDT.
Due to a software and mechanical issue with the Observatory's telescope we learned that they would not be able to position it in time for an attempt within the window of time for a possible moonsighting between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. The astronomers on duty this evening were able to calculate that there was only a 1% chance for a possible moonsighting anyway, and then only with telescopes. After a short shura, it was decided to drive to the nearest and highest point within the City of Vancouver, beside the Bloedel Conservatory in Queen Elizabeth Park. After praying Maghrib, we spent about 20 minutes searching for the moon, both with our eyes, and with long lens cameras. Not one of us saw the moon.
