New Crescent Moon of Safar 1445:
The Astronomical New Moon (conjunction) is on August 16, 2023 (Wednesday) at 9:38 UT.
On August 16, the moon can be seen by high powered telescope in Americas. On August 17, it can be seen with difficulty in Far East and Southern Europe, but can be easily seen in Africa and Americas. On August 18, it is visible in the whole world (See visibility curves).

The earliest reported sighting of the new crescent was on August 17 Thursday from Mauritius.

August 16, 2023 (Wednesday):

    Negative sighting of the moon for safar ul muzaffar from Bradford UK. 30 days of Muharram Ul Haram completed in the UK as well as Morocco.

August 17, 2023 (Thursday):

  • Australia:
      MCW Member Ebu Xhunejd from Albania. We sighted the new moon of Safar. The horizont was not clear but we could sight it with binoculars. In two different locations it was sighted by two persons by naked eye. So, tomorrow is 1 Safar 1445 AH.

      MCW Member Dr Shabbir Ahmed from Australia reported: Today (Thursday) 17th of August 2023, the Hilal of Safar 1445 has been sighted in Perth, Australia. Therefore, the month of Safar will begin from Friday, 18th of August 2023.

  • India:

      MCW MEmber Zaid Duch from India reported �On Thursday, 17th of August 2023 (29 Muharram, 1445) between 19:03 to 19:52 (Sunset 19:09 & Moonset 19:57) at Location: Navi Masjid, Nadiad, Gujarat, India; I attempted to sight the crescent moon (Hilal) of Safar 1445. The horizon was totally covered with clouds. I was Not able to sight the Hilal.�

  • Mauritius:

      MCW Member Ahaad Choychun from Mauritius reported: The crescent moon was seen in different location in Mauritius tonight Thursday 17 August, 2023 so Friday 18 August 2023 will be the 1st day of Safar 1445.

      MCW Member Nissar Ahmad from Mauritius reported: The New Moon of Safar was sighted at ST MARTIN on The West Coast at Mauritius on Thursday 17 August 2023, hence Friday 18 August 2023 will be 1st Day of Safar 1445 AH.

  • Sri Lanka:

      MCW member Shafraz Macksood, Colombo Sri Lanka reported: Sky was cloudy in Colombo, Sri Lanka. We couldn't see the Crescent with naked eye, saw the Crescent using Binoculars with difficulty, but able to photograph using a Nikon D5600 DSLR.

  • South Africa:

      MCW member Rashid Motala from South Africa reported: On the evening of Thursday 17 August 2023, the Hilaal WAS sighted in South Africa. Therefore Safar 1445 will commence on Friday, 18 August 2023 in South Africa.

  • Sri Lanka:

      MCW member Shafraz Macksood, Colombo Sri Lanka reported: Sky was cloudy in Colombo, Sri Lanka. We couldn't see the Crescent with naked eye, saw the Crescent using Binoculars with difficulty, but able to photograph using a Nikon D5600 DSLR.

  • Tanzania:

      MCW Member Sherally H. Sherally, Mwanza from Tanzania reported: Today, Thursday 17th August 2023, I Sherally Hussein Sherally, was fortunate to view the SAFAR NEW HILAAL (Crescent), at a village called KINTINKU which is 60 km West of DODOMA CAPITAL CITY OF TANZANIA. My first glance of the Crescent was at 19:04 p.m. (Sunset was at 18:40) local East African Std. Time. At that time the it was very very faint. The Sky was clear, without any clouds, but slightly hazy. After 5 min. The crescent was clear enough to be seen, but still very very thin. At 19:10 , I could see the Horns, SOMEHOW, looked like it were at 3-8 O'clock. I kept watching it until the Crescent went into the low - dark - grey Horizon, this was at 19:16. Truly this was one of my Rare New HILAAL Sightings in my whole life. . Alhamdulillah.

  • Irvine, California:

      MCW Member Mirza Shahid Basravi reported from Irvine, CA reported: Sunset in Irvine CA was at 7:34 pm. I was able to sight the new crescent with my 7 x 35 binoculars at 7:38 pm and then with my regular eyeglasses at 7:41 pm. The horns of the crescent were pointing to 2:30-6:30 positions.

      MCW Member Norm Vargas reported from Irvine, CA reported: The crescent moon was sighted from San Gabriel, CA on August 17, 2023 at 7:58 pm. It was seen by the naked eye low in the west, to the left of the sunset. The horns were at the 2:30-6:30 positions.

  • Blacksburg:

      MCW Member Javad Torabinejad reported from Blacksburg, VA reported: This evening (Thursday, August 17, 2023), crescent moon was sighted in Blacksburg, VA (Lat: 37� 15' 40" N, Lng: 80� 26' 56" W, and elevation: 646 meters). I arrived at my sighting location at 7:35 pm EDT (apparent sunset at 8:05 pm; actual sunset at 8:07 pm). The western horizon was partly cloudy and hazy. Soon after arrival, I started looking for the moon with a pair of binoculars (7x50). My first binocular sighting was at 8:06 pm. It took me over 20 minutes to sight the moon with the naked eye at 8:27 pm. The horns were approximately at 2:00 and 6:30 O'clock (2:00;4:00;6:30). I left the area soon after moonset (apparent moonset: 9:03 pm). At 8:35 pm
