MCW member K. Mohammed Hussain stated: The old crescent of Shawwal 1444 AH was seen today Thursday 28th of Shawwal 1444 (18th May 2023), taken by me from Palayamkottai Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, India. Time 5:25 am IST and horns were 4 to 10 O'Clock. Click on the photo to see full size.


MCW member AR Sugeng Riadi stated: The old crescent of Shawwal 1444 AH was sighted on Thursday, May 18, 2023 from Rowasiya Observatory at Bendo Ketitang Juwiring Klaten Central Java Indonesia. The sky was clear. Click on the photo to see full size.

New Crescent Moon of Dhul-Qi'dah 1444:
The Astronomical New Moon (conjunction) is on May 19, 2023 (Friday) at 15:53 UT.
On May 19, the moon can not be seen any where in the world. On May 20, it can be seen with difficulty in Far East and parts of Europe and Southern Africa. On May 20, it can be easily seen in parts of Northern Africa and Southern Europe as well as in Americas. On May 21, it can be seen in the whole world (See visibility curves).

The earliest reported sighting of the new crescent was on May 20, Saturday from Kozhikode, Kerala, India.

May 19, 2023 (Friday):

  • USA:

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Shahnoor Syed, On Behalf of Mahdavia Ruiyat e Hilal of Chicago, IL reported: Hilal of ZulQad was NOT Sighted at anyplace in Mainland USA on the 29th of Shawwal - Friday, May19, 2023. As such Shawwal will complete 30 days and the First day of ZulQad 1444H will be on Sunday, May21, 2023 in the USA.

May 20, 2023 (Saturday):

  • Albania:

    1. Seen in Kosovo: MCW member Ebu Xhunejd (Ledjo Hyka) from Tirana reported: We were some groups arond Albania but no one could sight the new moon on Saturday, May 20, 2023, but we were informed that it was sighted in Kosovo, so tomorrow is the first day of Dhul Ka'deh.

  • Australia:

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Shabbir Ahmed, President of Qubaa association of Western Sydney, NSW reported: Today (Saturday) 20th of May 2023, the Hilal of Dhul Qa�dah 1444 has not been sighted anywhere in Australia. Therefore, the month of Dhul Qa�dah 1444 will begin from Monday, 22nd of May 2023.

  • Grenada:

    1. Seen: MCW member Farid Patel from Grenada reported: This is to confirm that the new moon for the month of Dhul Qadha was sighted in Grenada Saturday 20th of May 2023. There for the first day of dhul qadah is on Sunday 21st of May 2023.

  • India:

    1. Seen: MCW member Rasheed Usman, from Kozhikode, Kerala reported: The hilal of Dul Qaada 1444:h has been sighted today Saturday evening 20th May 2023 at Kapad Beach, Kozhikode Kerala as informed by the representative of Qazi of Kapad and confirmed by Kozhikode Valiya Qazi . Accordingly Dul Qada month begins in the State of Kerala on Sunday 21st May 2023.

  • Indonesia:

    1. Not Seen: But captured by telescope MCW member AR Sugeng Riyadi from Assalam Observatory reported: The new crescent of DzulQo'dah 1444 AH was not sighted on Saturday, May 20, 2023 from Assalaam Observatory at Assalaam Islamic Modern Boarding Pabelan Kartasura Sukoharjo Central Java Indonesia. The western sky was partly cloudy and rather hazy. The moon was captured by telescope from Ponorogo East Java Indonesia. According to New MABIMS, the 1st of DzulQo'1444 AH in Indonesia will start on Sunday, 21 of May 2023.

  • Kenya:

    1. Seen: MCW member Muhammad A Said from Mombasa reported: On Saturday, May 20, 2023 / 29th Shawwal 1444 AH the sky was slightly hazy near the horizon. Alhamdulilah I saw the crescent with binoculars and the orientation was 4 to 10 O'clock. It was seen with naked eye by others in Mombasa, Kenya and in Mwanza Tanzania. Sunday the 21st of May 2023 will be 1st of DHUL QA'ADAH 1444 AH.

  • Lebanon:

    1. Seen: MCW member Dr. Hadi Jaafar from Beirut reported: On May 20,2023, I was able to sight the crescent moon of ZhKaada this evening at 8 PM local time, Beirut with the naked eye. The moon was extremely thin and horns between 4 and 7 o�clock. Local sunset at 7:35 and local moon set at 8:20 PM.

  • Mauritius:

    1. Not Seen: CHOYCHUN AHAAD from Port Louis reported: The crescent moon was not seen in Mauritius tonight Saturday May 20, 2023 so Sunday May 21, 2023 will be the 30th day of Shawwal 1444 Monday May 22, 2023 will be the 1st day of Zil Qadh 1444.

  • Morocco:

    1. Seen by others in different cities: MCW member Zakaria Guelzim from Bouznika reported: This is to inform you that I tried to sight the Hilal of Dhu Alqi'ada after Maghrib of Saturday, May 20th, 2023 in Rabat Morocco without succes due the the presence of heavy clouds in the western horizon. The Hilal was sighted by several friends from other cities of Morocco (Tangier, Boujdour, Dakhla...). In its press release, the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs informs the citizens that it observed the crescent of the month of Dhu al-Qi`dah, after Maghrib on Saturday, Shawwal 29, 1444 AH, corresponding to May 20, 2023 AD.

  • South Africa:

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Rashid Motala from Durban reported: On the evening of Saturday 20 May 2023, the Hilaal was NOT sighted in South Africa. Therefore Zul Qa'dah 1444 will commence on Monday, 22 May 2023 in South Africa.

    2. Not Seen: MCW member Keeka, Mohamed Iqbal from Pretoria reported: The moon marking the start of Zul'Qadah 1444 was NOT sighted this evening, Saturday 20th May 2023, in South Africa. Hence, the 1st of Zul'Qadah will be on Sunday 21st May 2023.

  • UK:

    1. Seen: Mr Mohammad Ali Javed from Luton reported: Today, Saturday 20th May 2023 at 9:30pm, The moon of Dhul Qa�dah 1444 was sighted in Luton, United Kingdom. The sky was clear and moon was sighted with the naked eye. 1st Dhul Qa�dah will begin on Sunday 21st May 2023.

  • USA:

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Javad Torabinejad from Blacksburg VA reported: This evening (Saturday, May 20, 2023), the crescent moon was not seen in Blacksburg, VA. For the most part, the sky was cloudy.

    1. Seen: MCW member Abul Qasim Rizvi, Imam Juma Melbourne reported: Moon has been sighted in Brisbane,Bundaberg QLD Eastern Australia. 1st Dhul Qa�Dah 1444 AH will be on Monday 22nd May 2023.

  • Pakistan:

    1. Seen: MCW member Umair Mirza from Lahore reported: On Sunday, 21 May 2023 at Lahore, Pakistan, I sighted the crescent (Hilal) of Dhul-Qi'dah at 19:08:32 with naked eye at my place, near Shalimar Gardens, Lahore, Pakistan. The age of New Moon was 46 hours 15 minutes. First of Dhul-Qi'dah1444 will be observed on Monday, 22 May 2023.
