MCW member K.Mohammed Hussain Palayamkottai Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, India said: I have enclosed the photo of Urjoonul Qadeem like Waning Crescemt moon taken today Wednesday 28th of Dhul Hijjah 1443 (27 th July 2022), Latitude 8�43'36.3"N and Longitude 77�45'22.9"E: Time 5:28 am IST; The Illumination was about 3%; The Altitude was more than 8�; and horns were at 3 & 8 O'Clock.

MCW member AR Sugeng Riyadi, Surakarta, Java reported: The old crescent of Dzulhijjah 1443 AH was seen on Wednesday, July 27, 2022 between thick clouds from Assalaam Observatory, Sukoharjo Central Java Indonesia.

New Crescent Moon of Muharram 1444:
The Astronomical New Moon (conjunction) is on July 28, 2022 (Thursday) at 17:55 UT.
On July 28, the crescent can not be seen anywhere. On July 29, with difficulty it may be seen in Africa and Canada, but can easily be seen in Americas. On July 30, it can be seen in the whole world. (See visibility curves).

The earliest reported sighting of the new crescent was on Friday, July 29 from Mombasa, Kenya

July 28, 2022 (Thursday):

  • USA:


    1. Not Seen: Mahdavia Rui�yat e Hilal in North America announced: (By Allamatul Asr Shams-ul-Ulema Murshidna Moulana Hazrat Abulfatah Syed Nusrat Miyan Qibla)
      Faqir Abulfatah Syed Nusrat hereby declares that the Hilal of Muharram was NOT Sighted at anyplace in Mainland USA & Canada on the 29th of ZilHajj - Thursday, July 28, 2022. Consequently, ZilHajj will complete 30 day and the 1st of MUHARRAM 1444H will be on Saturday, July 30, 2022.

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Ledjo Hyka from Albania reported: We were some groups at the sea and in the mountains. We tried to sight the new moon, but we couldn't, even with binoculars. The sky was clear.

  • Australia:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Shabbir Ahmed, President of Qubaa association of Western Sydney, NSW reported: Today (Friday) 29th of July 2022, the Hilal of Muharram 1444 has not been sighted anywhere in Australia. Therefore, the month of Muharram 1444 will begin from Sunday, 31st of July 2022.

  • Canada:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member HiMY SYeD from Brampton Ontario reported: On July 29, Minutes after Maghrib Prayer, I searched for the new moon for about ten minutes. There is a small amount of humidity in the air. Sky is clear this evening. But, it was partly cloudy immediately above the horizon. After searching for about 10 minutes, I could not find nor see the new crescent.

    2. Seen: MCW member Yonus Sahadat from Vancouver, British Columbia reported: On July 29, the moon was sighted around 9:27 PM on Knight Street bridge which connects Vancouver to Richmond. The orientation was 2 and 7. It was very very thin and very low on horizon, but Alhamdullelah was sighted by three people. I was there with two other witness from 8:45 pm to 9:35 pm and sighted around 9:27 pm.

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Muhammad Sohail from Coquimbio reported: On July 29, the new moon is not sighted due to heavy clouds.

  • Egypt:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Hisham M. Hamed from Cairo reported: Last night, Friday, July 29th, I was with a friend of mine. We reached our intended observation point (29.972�, 30.932�) shortly before apparent sunset 18:52. The sunset was beautiful, and there were no clouds in sight. We returned to this point after Maghrib prayers in an adjacent mosque. There was no sign of the Moon. Temperature, pressure and relative humidity were 35.0�C, 1006 mB, and 26% respectively. Best time was at 19:15. The crescent width was 16.6 arcseconds. The Crescent brightness was below the threshold for point source visibility by: 0.355273 magnitudes/arcsec�.

Not Seen: MCW member Zaid Duch from GUJARAT, INDIA reported: On Friday, 29th of July 2022 (29 Dhul Hijjah, 1443) between 19:20 to 20:05 (Sunset 19:21 & Moonset 20:07) at Location: Navi Masjid, Nadiad, Gujarat, India; we group of 4 people attempted to sight the crescent moon (Hilal) of Muharram 1444. We were not able to sight the Hilal, the western horizon was mostly covered with clouds.

    2. Not Seen: MCW member Rasheed Usman, Kozhikode, Kerala reported: There are no reports of sighting of hilal of Muharram 1444 AH in the State of Kerala in the evening of Friday 29th July 2022.

  • Indonesia:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member AR Sugeng Riyadi from Rowasiya Observatory reported: The new crescent of Muharram 1444 AH was not sighted on Friday, July 29, 2022 from Assalaam Observatory, Pabelan Kartasura Sukoharjo Central Java Indonesia. The sky rather hazy.

  • Kenya:


    1. Seen: MCW member Muhammad A Said from Mombasa reported: Today Friday the 29th of july / 29th of Dhul-Hijjah 1443. The weather was mostly cloudy, but there were openings in the western parts, near the horizon. Three of Us were able to see the Cresent at around 6:50 pm (East Africa time) using Celestron SkyMaster 80*20 Binoculars. We were not able to see with naked eye nor were we able to photograph the crescent.

  • Lebanon:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Dr. Hadi Jaafar from Beirut reported: I tried to sight the moon this evening of July 29, 2022 at around 7:45 PM, local time in Beirut, Lebanon. Sky was clear, but the western horizon had some haze. I scanned the horizon until 8:20 PM using my 7*50 pair of binoculars with no success.

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Keeka, Mohamed Iqbal, Pretoria reported: Due to no confirmed moonsighting in South Africa tonight, Friday, 29 July 2022, the 1st Muharram 1444 will thus begin after Maghrib on Saturday, 30 July 2022.

  • South Africa:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Rashid Motala from Durban reported: On the evening of Friday 29 July 2022, the Hilaal was NOT sighted in South Africa. Therefore Muharram 1444 will commence on Sunday, 31 July 2022 in South Africa.

  • Sri Lanka:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Nular Bary from Colombo reported: Today 29th of Dhul Hajji 1443H (29/7/2022) evening the new moon was not sighted anywhere in Sri Lanka. Hence Month of Dhul Hajj will complete 30 days and the New Year, Muharram 1444H will be on Sunday 31st of July 2022. It was decided by The Colombo Grand Mosque Hilal Committee in Sri Lanka.

  • Tanzania:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Hamza Rijal from Tiny Island of Zanzibar reported: The Muharrum Hilaal was sighted in the neighboring country on the 29th July 2022, and tomorrow Saturday 30 July 2022 marks the first of Muharram and the beginning of the 1444 AH in the tiny Island of Zanzibar. The Mufty offices have confirmed the beginning of the month of Muharram on 30th July 2022.

  • UK:


    1. Seen: MCW member Juned Patel from Bolton Lancshire reported: Moon was sighted on July 29 from Marget Beach, Kent, UK
      NOT SIGHTED by naked eyes
      Sighted with Binoculars at 21:17 only by Juned Patel
      Sighted with Telescope at 21:08 by Juned Patel and Dr Ayyub
      Sighted using enhancing techniques before sunset at 19:58
      The sky was absolutely clear except for the western horizon below 2 degrees. I saw the moon with binoculars until it disappear behind the clouds at 2 degrees.

  • USA:


    1. Seen: MCW member Joynal Abedin from Buffalo NY reported: The Muharrum Hilaal is sighted today Buffalo NY, July 29th of Friday 2022 - 1444h. The sky was partly cloudy, it was hard to see. I tried couple of locations after I saw with naked eye, the muhrram hilal was super tiny , the sky was not clear. Sunset 8:39 pm and moon set 9:41pm.

Seen: Council of Shia Muslim Scholars in North America announced: The Moon-Sighting Committee of the Council of Shia Muslim Scholars of North America announces that Saturday, July 30th, 2022 will be the first day of the Month of Muharram for the entire region of North America. This determination is based on the fact that there were verified sightings of the crescent moon by the naked eye at sunset on Friday, July 29th, 2022, in Blacksburg, Virginia, Toledo, Ohio, and Denver, Colorado, as of the moment this announcement is being issued.

    3. Seen: MCW member Dr Javad Torabinejad from Blacksburg VA reported: This evening (Friday, July 29, 2022), the crescent moon was sighted in Blacksburg, VA (Lat: 37� 15' 40" N, Lng: 80� 26' 56" W, and elevation: 646 meters). I was at my sighting location by 7:40 pm EDT (sunset: 8:33 pm). Upon my arrival, the western horizon was mostly cloudy and hazy. At 8:24 pm, using a pair of binoculars (7X50), I started looking for the crescent moon in the partial clearings. My first binocular sighting of the moon was at 8:52 pm. At 9:03 pm, I saw the crescent with naked eye. The horns were approximately at 2:30 and 6:30 O'clock (2:30;4:00;6:30). I'm sure if it were not because of the clouds and haziness the sighting times would have been earlier. Later when the moon was close to the horizon, a couple of my friends arrived; they easily saw the crescent with naked eye (moonset: 9:34 pm). At 8:55 pm, the temperature, dew point, relative humidity, and pressure were 73.0 F, 72.0 F, 96%, and 30.11 in, respectively.

    4. Seen: MCW member Mirza Shahid Basravi from Irvine CA reported: Sighting the new crescent of Muharram on Friday July 29, 2022. The new crescent was easily viewed with my regular glasses.

July 30, 2022 (Saturday):

  • Australia:


    1. Seen: MCW member Moussa Khalife from Sydney, NSW reported: Today is Saturday 30th of July 2022 we have have sighted the moon in sydney Australia. The moon was quite high in the sky and the weather was totally clear so we have sighted the moon at 5:35 pm for more than 15 min. So tomorrow Sunday 31st of July is the first of muharram 1444H.
