New Crescent Moon of Rabi-al-Thani 1440:

The Astronomical New Moon (conjunction) is on December 7, 2018 (Friday) at 7:20 UT. On December 7, the moon may be seen by telescope in Americas. On December 8, the moon can be seen with naked eye in most of the world except in Australia, Japan, and Northern Europe. On December 9, it can be easily seen all over the world (See visibility curves).

The earliest reported sighting of the new crescent was on December 8, 2018 from Cotabato City, Philippines.

December 7, 2018 (Friday):

  • South Africa:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Rashid Motala from Durban reported: On the evening of Friday 7th December 2018, the Hilaal was NOT sighted in South Africa. Therefore Rabi-us-Thaani 1440 will commence on Sunday 9th December 2018 in South Africa.

    2. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Abdurrazak Ebrahim,Secretary, Crescent Observer�s Society of South Africa from Cape Town reported: The Rabi 2 Hilaal was not sighted in South Africa on Friday evening. The official 1st day of Rabi 2 shall be on Sunday, 9 December 2018.

  • UK:


    1. Not Seen: Wifaqul Ulama Administrator of Britain reported: Moon was not sighted anywhere in Britain or in our closest Muslim country of Morocco. Wifaqul Ulama have therefore decided that 30 days of Rabiul-Awwal will be completed. 1st day of Rabiut-Thani 1440 will be on Sunday, the 09th of December 2018..

  • Trinidad and Tobago:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Umar Abdullah from Bon Accord, Tobago reported: The crescent moon to commence the month of Rabii'uth Thaanii 1440 AH was looked for after the sunset of Friday 7th December 2018. Reports from all committees locally and regional confirm that the moon was NOT SIGHTED.
      We have accepted these reports and has declared that the month of Rabii'ul Awwal 1440 AH will complete 30 days. Therefore the 1st night of Rabii'uth Thaanii 1440 AH will be the night of Saturday 8th December 2018, and the first day of Rabii'ul Awwal 1440 AH will be the day of Sunday 9th December 2018.

  • USA:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Mohamedraza H.Janmohamed from Sanford FL reported: The Moon-sighting Sub-committee wishes to inform the community that there was no sighting of the new crescent on Friday, December 07, 2018. Therefore upon completion of 30 Days of Mahe Rabi-ul-Awwal, SUNDAY, DECEMBER 09, 2018 is established as the 1st Day of Mahe Rabi-ul-Aakher, 1440 AH.

    2. Not Seen: Council of Shia Muslim Scholars in North America announced: The Moon-Sighting Committee of the Council of Shia Muslim Scholars of North America announces that Saturday, December 8th, 2018 will be the last day of the month of Rabi al-Awwal, 1440 A.H. and Sunday, December 9th, 2018, will be the first day of the month of Rabi al-Thani, 1440 A.H. for the entire region of North America.
      This determination is based on the fact that there were no verified sightings of the crescent moon by the naked eye at sunset on Friday, December 7th, 2018, in any region of North America.

December 8, 2018 (Saturday):

  • Australia:


    1. Seen: MCW member Dr Shabbir Ahmed, President of Qubaa association of Western Sydney, NSW reported: Today (Saturday) 8th December 2018, the Hilaal of Rabi�ul Thaani has been sighted in Perth. Therefore, the month of Rabi�ul Thaani will commence from Sunday, 9th of December 2018.

    2. Not Seen (Clouy): MCW member Mr Moussa Khalife from Sydney, NSW reported: Today is Saturday 8th of December 2018 , the moon was not sighted in sydney Australia. The weather was mostly clear but we couldn�t see the moon.

  • Egypt:


    1. Not Seen (Clouds): MCW member Dr Hisham M. Hamed from Giza reported: From Giza, (30.0�N, 31.2�E), Egypt, Sat Dec 8, Hilal of Rabi'l-aakhir was obscured by clouds.
      Apparent sunset was around 16:55, and best time was ~ 17:25. I started my observation attempt just after Maghrib prayers ~ 17:15. The sky was overcast most of the day, and especially after sunset. Temperature, pressure and relative humidity were 18�C, 1013.2mB, and 56% respectively. Barring clouds, brightness calculations indicate a very easy sighting.

  • India:


    1. Seen: MCW member Mr Yusuf Idara from New Delhi reported: Today 08-December-2018 = 29-Rabiul Awwal-1440 Hijri. In New Delhi, Amarate Sharia Declared that the Moon was sighted After Maghreb Salah

    2. Seen: MCW member Molvi Iqbalhusen Bokda from Godhra, Gujrat reported: Moon for Rabiul Aakhar sighted today on 29th Ra.Awwal, 1440 Saturday (8th December, 2018) in many parts of India. Crescent vwas clearly seen in Mumbai, Malegao and many other cities, while some persons at Surat,Achhod and Anjar sighted. Moon committees of Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Surat and Malegaon declared that it will be first of Rabiul Aakhar on 9th December.

  • Morocco:


    1. Seen: MCW member Mr Ehsan H. Hajar from Casablanca reported: From Casablanca Morocco,Saturday Dec. 8th with a clear sky @ the SW horizon I was easily able to spot the new crescent of Rabi-al-Thani 1440 @ 5:50 PM . horns 2~7.
      Morocco habous published not seen on Friday , to complete Rabi -Aoual 30 Days & declaring Sunday as beginning of Rabi-al-Thani 1440. May ALLAH the all mighty bestow his mercy & guidance to moslems around the globe.

  • Nepal:


    1. Seen in India: MCW member Mr Muhammad Aamir, Vice Secretary Nepali Jame Masjid Committee, Kathmandu reported: The Hilal of Rabi Al-Thani was not sighted on 8th December 2018 anywhere in Kathmandu. Sighting reports arrived from India, so, on this basis of sighting, 1st day of Rabi Al-Thani will commence from Sunday, 9th December 2018.

  • New Zealand:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Abid Jafery from Auckland reported: Mon 10 Dec 2018 is 1st Rabius Sani 1440 Hijri InshaAllah because no sightings reported in NZ and Fiji on 8 Dec 2018 (29 Rabi-al Awwal 1440). This announcement is based on �No� reported sightings of the crescent moon, by the trusted sources, during the sunset of 8 Dec, 2018 (29th Rabi-al Awwal, 1440 Hijri), from any regions of NZ.

  • Nigeria:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Jinadu Yunusa from Kisi, Oyo State reported: I tried to sight for the new crescent of Robihu Thanni today Saturday, 08/12/18 I didn't see it due to ROWDY whether. Period: Between 6:25pm-7pm LT. Sunset: 6:25pm LT. Meanwhile, there was no official announcement yesterday by the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs that Moon was sighted. Definitely, today is 30th of Robihu Awwal while tomorrow Sunday will be 1st of Robihu Thanni. Allah Knows best.

  • Pakistan:


    1. Seen: MCW member Mr Shoaib Saleem from Tarbela Dam reported: In Pakistan, as per announcement of central Ruait-e-Hilal Committee of Pakistan the new moon of Rabiual Sani 1440 seen on 8th Dec 2018. 1st Rabiul Sani on 9th Dec, 2018.
      At my local sight (Tarbela Dam) due to clouds I can not see the new moon.

  • Philippines:


    1. Seen: MCW member Mr Jalil Rayhan from Cotabato City reported: On December 08, 2018, at 5:52 pm (LT) at Cotabato City, Philippines, the crescent moon of Rabi Thani 1440 was seen.

  • Saudi Arabia:


    1. Seen: MCW member Dr Ayyub Patel from Abha reported: As seen from a place near Jeddah on the 8th of dec 2018 at 6.15pm. Even though the age of this moon was 30+ hours, it took around 20 mins after sunset to sight it with the naked eye.
