New Crescent Moon of Jumada-al-Oola 1440:

The Astronomical New Moon (conjunction) is on January 6, 2019 (Sunday) at 1:28 UT. On January 6, there is no possibility to see this moon, except by telescope in Americas. On January 7, 2019 (Monday) the moon can be easily seen in the whole world except New Zealand (See visibility curves).

The earliest reported sighting of the new crescent was on Monday, January 7, 2019 from Cairo, Egypt.

January 6, 2019 (Sunday):

  • Australia:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Shabbir Ahmed, President of Qubaa association of Western Sydney, NSW reported: Today (Sunday) 6th of January 2019, the Hilal of Jamadiyul Oula 1440 has NOT been sighted anywhere in Australia. Therefore, the month of Jamadiyul Oula 1440 will begin from Tuesday, 8th of January 2019.

  • India:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Molvi Iqbalhusen Bokda from Godhra, Gujrat reported: Moon for Jumadal Ula was not sighted today here at Godhra on 29th Rabiul-Aakhar, 1440 (6th January,2019). Sky was clear. All major Crescent Committees of India have declared that moon was not seen. n

  • Morocco:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Zakaria Guelzim from Rabat reported: On Sunday 06 January 2019, I tried to sight the Hilal of Jumada l in Rabat Morocco from Sun Set at 18:40 (GMT+1) to 19:05. I was not able to sight it. The sky was clear in the sunset area. (See attached pictures with zoom 70 and 300 mm). The Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs in Morocco informed the citizens that they observed the new moon of Jumada I 1440 AH, after Maghrib of Sunday, 29 Rabii II 1440 AH, 06 January 2019 and could not sight it anywhere in Morocco. Hence, the beginning of the month of Jumada I 1440 AH will be on Tuesday 08 January 2019.

  • Nigeria:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr HabibuRahman Yunus from Gyawana, Adamawa State reported: Here in Gyawana, Adamawa State, Nigeria. I tried sighting the new crescent moon for the month of (Jumad al-Awwal, 1440) today Sunday (Jan 6th) from sunset time 18:06 until 18:36, I couldn't find it. Sky was clear

  • South Africa:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Abdurrazak Ebrahim,Secretary, Crescent Observer�s Society of South Africa from Cape Town reported: The Hilaal for Jamadal Ula 1440 H was not sighted in South Africa. 1st Jamadal Ula will correspond with 8th January 2019.

  • Tanzania:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Hamza Rijal from Tiny Island of Zanzibar reported: The Hilaal for Jumada-al-Oola was not sighted in tiny island of Zanzibar-Tanzania (January 6),? condition was hazy in most part of the island, therefore 30 days would be completed for the Rabi-at-Thani 1440 AH.

  • Trinidad and Tobago:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Umar Abdullah from Bon Accord, Tobago reported: The crescent moon to commence the month of Jumaadal Uulaa 1440 AH was looked for after the sunset of Sunday 6th December 2018. Reports from all committees locally and regional confirm that the moon was NOT SIGHTED.
      We have accepted these reports and has declared that the month of Rabii'uth Thaanii 1440 AH will complete 30 days. Therefore the 1st night of Jumaadal Uulaa 1440 AH will be the night of Monday 7th December 2018 and the first day of Jumaadal Uulaa 1440 AH will be the day of Tuesday 8th December 2018.

  • UK:


    1. Not Seen: Wifaqul Ulama Administrator of Britain reported: The Hilaal for Jumad� al-Ul� 1440 was not sighted in the UK or anywhere else in the world including Morocco and South Africa. Wifaqul Ulama Shura have therefore decided that the month of Rabiut-Thani 1440 will complete 30 days. 1st day of Jumad� al-Ul� 1440 will be on Tuesday, the 8th of January 2019.

  • USA:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Javad Torabinejad from Blacksburg VA reported: This evening (Sunday, Jan 6, 2019), the crescent moon was not seen in Blacksburg, VA (Lat: 37� 15' 40" N, Lng: 80� 26' 56" W, and elevation: 646 meters). I arrived at my sighting location at sunset (5:19 pm EST). Using two pairs of binoculars (7X35 and 10X50), I started scanning the western horizon. The lower portion of the horizon was partly cloudy and hazy. With no success, I ended the session at about moonset (moonset: 6:01 pm). At 5:35 pm, the temperature, dew point, relative humidity, and pressure were 49 F, 33 F, 53%, and 27.9 in, respectively.

    2. Not Seen: Council of Shia Muslim Scholars in North America announced: The Moon-Sighting Committee of the Council of Shia Muslim Scholars of North America announces that Monday, January 7th, 2018 will be the last day of the month of Rabi al-Thani, 1440 A.H. and Tuesday, January 8th, 2018, will be the first day of the month of Jumada al-Awwal, 1440 A.H. for the entire region of North America.
      This determination is based on the fact that there were no verified sightings of the crescent moon by the naked eye at sunset on Sunday, January 6th, 2018, in any region of North America.

    3. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Mohamedraza H.Janmohamed from Sanford FL reported: The Moon-sighting Sub-committee wishes to inform the community that there was NO sighting of the new crescent for the month of Jamadi-ul-Awwal on Sunday, January 6, 2019. Therefore, upon completion of 30 days, TUESDAY, JANUARY 08, 2019 is established as the 1st Day of Mahe Jamadi-ul-Awwal, 1440 AH.

January 7, 2019 (Monday):

  • Egypt:


    1. Seen: MCW member Dr Hisham M. Hamed from South Cairo reported: From Ma'adi, South Cairo (29.96�N, 31.25�E), Monday, Jan 7th 2019, Hilal of Jumada I 1440 was seen. I started my observation attempt at apparent sunset (17.10), at which time there was no sign of the Crescent, despite excellent visibility. I went off to Maghrib prayers in a nearby Mosque. I saw the Hilal of Jumada'l-Oula on my way back at 17:37. Temperature, pressure and relative humidity were 15.5�C, 1013Mb, and 45% respectively. This was an excellent lunar photoshoot opportunity.

    1. Seen: MCW member Mr Wan Syafuan from Kuala Lumpur reported: New crescent moon Jamadil-Awwal, Date : 7 January 2019 (1 Jamadil-Awwal 1440) (Monday). Location : Putrajaya International Convention Centre (Kuala Lumpur). Time : 19:33 hours. Click on the photo on right to see full size.

  • Nigeria:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Wasiu Akewusola from Alausa-Ikeja, Lagos reported: The crescent of Jummadal awwal 1440AH could not be Sighted in Alausa-Ikeja Lagos Nigeria tonight Monday 7th January 2019. Although the cloud was not too clear.

  • Trinidad and Tobago:


    1. Seen: MCW member Mr Ishmael Khan from Princes Town, Trinidad reported: The moon to commence the month of Rabi-Al-ThAni 1440 was sighted after the Maghrib salaah on Monday 7th January 2019, being the first night. The crescent was from 4:00 o�clock to 8:00. O� clock. The first day of Rabi-AlThani 1440 is Tuesday 8th January 2019. May Allah have mercies on us all.

  • USA:


    1. Seen: MCW member Dr Javad Torabinejad from Blacksburg VA reported: This evening (Monday, January 7, 2019), the crescent moon was sighted in Blacksburg, VA (Lat: 37� 15' 40" N, Lng: 80� 26' 56" W, and elevation: 646 meters). I arrived at my sighting location at 6:05 pm EST (sunset: 5:20 pm). The sky was mostly cloudy and hazy. I waited for the moon to appear in an opening very low in the horizon. At 6:38 pm, the moon appeared in the opening. I used a pair of binoculars (7X50) to locate the horns. They were at approximately 2:30 and 7:30 O'clock (2:30;5:00;7:30). By 6:50 pm the moon was not visible anymore (moonset: 6:55 pm). At 6:35 pm, the temperature, dew point, relative humidity, and pressure were 39.0 F, 28.0 F, 65%, and 28.0 in, respectively.
