The Astronomical New Moon is on 14 April 2010 (Wednesday) at 12:29 UT. On 14 April, this moon can not be seen anywhere by naked eye. On 14 April, by telescope it may be seen in North America only, as shown in the visibility map. On 15 April, it will be easily visible in most asia, all europe, Africa, and Americas, but impossible to see in New Zealand, Australia, and southern tips of Africa and South America.

    1. Not Seen: Sheik A.A. Ishola (MCW member) from Ikorodu, Lagos reported: I and my Kids tried to search for the Jumadal-uulah crescent today 14-4-2010 in Jubilee estate area of Ikorodu Lagos state but was not seen due to the clouds.

  • Canada:

    1. Not Seen: HiMY SYeD (MCW member) from Toronto Ontario reported: I have been standing in Christie Pits Park in Downtown Toronto since sunset about 15 minutes ago. Other than the odd ConTrail and few evening clouds, there is no moonsighting with the naked eye tonight.

    2. Not Seen: Baig Muhammad Tamachi (MCW member) from Peterborough Ontario reported: Due to lower band of clouds above the horizon and haze in the westerly skies, it was not possible to see the hilaal this evening.

  • USA:

    1. Not Seen: Javad Torabinejad (MCW member) from Blacksburg VA reported: This evening (Wednesday, April 14, 2010), using binoculars, we tried sighting the crescent of Jumada-1 with no success. The sky was very hazy and partly cloudy and soon after we arrived at the sighting location (before sunset), more clouds rolled in and made it impossible to do any sighting.

    2. Not Seen: Jim Stamm (MCW member) from Tucson AZ reported: I was NOT able to see the crescent, even through a telescope. The openings between the cloud bands may have been actually just lighter clouds. Everything was set perfectly.

    1. Not Seen: Muhammed Ali Kazi from Mumbai reported: This is to inform Report on moon sighting Jamdul Oola NOT seen on 15th April 2010. also there were a lot of clouds in that directions. This also confirms as per your maps that it will not be seen in Mumbai. Insha Allah it will be observed tommorow.

    2. Not Seen: Iqbalhusen Bokda (MCW member) from Gujrat reported: On Apeil 15, though sky was very clear, we could not see the crescent. I can not understand why moon did not appear, though all of yours, Dr. ManzurAhmad's and Sultan's reports declared that it will easily be sighted.

    3. Not Seen: Mohammed Mohsin Khan (MCW member) from Mumbai reported: Thursday 15 April 2010 / 29 Rabi-us-Saani 1431 in India. Here in Mumbai Sunset was at 06:56 pm IST and Moonset was at 07:47 pm IST. So there was 51 mins difference but Sky was cloudy hence Crescent has not been Sighted in Mumbai and in Most Parts of India. Official Moon-Sighting Committee of INDIA have officially announced that Friday 16 April 2009 will be 30th Rabi-us-Saani 1431 and 1st Jamadil Awwal 1431 will fall on Saturday 17 April 2010.

  • Sri Lanka:

Not Seen: Nular Bary (MCW member) from Colombo reported: Today 29th.Rabi Ul Thani 1431H (15/04/2010) Thursday, I tried to sight the New Moon of Jumad Ul Awwal the western sky was clear but I couldn't see the New Moon by naked eye, I checked with our Hilal committee secretary Mowlavi Abdul Azeez, he confirmed no one has sighted the hilal any ware in the country so decided to start the Month of Jumad Ul Awwal 1431H, on Saturday 17/04/2010, and complete the month of Rabi Ul Thani with 30 days. "INSHAALLAH'

  • Pakistan:

    1. Seen: By others in other locations in Pakistan Sultan Alam (MCW member) from Karachi reported: On my request, Today i.e. on Thursday 15 April 2010 (=29 Rabee-uth-Thani 1431 in Pakistan) nearly two hundred persons (members of the moon sighting committees of our institute �Jamia-tur-Rasheed� + my friends + their companions) tried to sight the moon at nearly 25 places all over Pakistan and resultantly, Alhamdolillah, moon was seen at 3 places of Balochistan (Solo-Bulaidah, Pishokan & Jiwani) by 35 persons.
      As it was nearly 8 to 9 degrees hazy in Karachi and many other cities were cloudy or very hazy hence moon was not sighted in those places. Weather was clear at some places but moon was not sighted there also.
      Note: Chairman of central official moon-sighting committee of Pakistan "Mufti Munee-bur-Rahman" told me on my mobile phone that as he also received the positive naked eye sighting from the official meteorological centers of Jiwani and Quetta, he officially announced that Friday 16 April 2010 is the 1st Jumadal-oola 1431.

  • Mauritius:

    1. Not Seen: Goolam Tegally (MCW member) from Port Louis reported: Hilal was NOT sighted this evening Thursday 15 April here in Mauritius despite a relatively clear sky with some clouds over the horizon & the help of 10x binoculars. We will therefore complete 30 days of Rabi II and 1st of Jumada I will be on Friday 16 April.

  • South Africa:

    1. Not Seen: Rashid Motala (MCW member) from Durban reported: The Hilaal was not sighted in S. Africa this evening, the 5th straight month on non-sighting. Quite unusual.

    2. Not Seen: Dr. Abdurrazak Ebrahim (MCW member) from Cape Town reported: The Hilaal was not sighted in Cape Town, Durban or Johannesburg on Thursday evening, 15 April 2010 and the end of the 29th Rabi-ul Thani 1431 AH. There was a possibility of sighting the Hilaal in the far north of South Africa. Unfortunately there is no crescent observer group in that area. We have to look into this matter. This is now the 5th consecutive negative sighting in South Africa. The official first day of Jamadal Ula in South Africa will correspond to Saturday, 17 April 2010.

  • Netherlands:

    1. Seen: M.D. Karamatali (MCW member) from Lelystad reported: The new crescent moon is seen on 15th of april at 930 pm in lelystad.

  • Nigeria:

    1. Not Seen: (Overcast) Muhammed Yasin Qamardeen (MCW member) from Ilorin reported: We attempted to sight the new Hilal of Jumadal Awwal on the Thursday 15, 2010 evening but it was not visible here in Lagos. In a phone chat with Amirul Lajinatul Hilal of Ilorin Kwara State, Nigeria, it was confirmed that they were unable to sight New Hilal. Also in phone chat with Brother Simwal Jubril, he was not able to sight the new Hilal as result of overcast.

    2. Not Seen: (Clouds) Sheik A.A. Ishola (MCW member) from Ikorodu, Lagos reported: I and few brothers in the Jubilee estate area of Ikorodu Lagos State tried to look for the Jumadal-Oola for the second day today 15-4-2010 and was not seen due to total clouds. I called Brother Simwal Jibril in Kaduna he said there is a little rain like wise Proffessor Naffaty in Bauchi also negative report. Tommoroow is our 1st of Jummadal-uula 1431.

  • Senegal:

    1. Not Seen: Ibrahima Thierno LO (MCW member) from Dakar reported: Sighting the crescent by naked eyes was tried, but it was not seen at Thursday 15 April. The sky near the western horizon was partly cloudy. The national committee of Hilal sighting have declared 1 Jumadal Awwal will be Saturday 17 April.

  • Morocco:

    1. Seen: Ehsan H. Hajar (MCW member) from Casablanca reported: I should have written yesterday (Wed, 14th April) to advise you of no sighting for Casablanca Morocco. Today, 15th April, though was a very cloudy and rainy day, we had a late evening clear horizon in which a nice new Moon was well visible by naked eye in the WNW sky. Horns extending between 4:30 & 7:30.with a thick crescent one hour after SS. with the new Hilal, Friday should be announced as first day of JMO.

  • Tanzania:

    1. Seen: Hamza Rijal (MCW member) from Island of Zanzibar reported: From the tiny island of Zanzibar the weather of Unguja Island was moderate in the evening of April 15. I tried to observe the Hilal of Month of Jumada-al-Oola. I was able to see it by naked eye. The Sunset was at 1830 Local time (1530 GMT). Friday 16 April is the first day of Jumada-al-Oola.

  • UK:

    1. Seen: Qamar Uddin (MCW member) from York reported: On Thursday 15 April 2010 (29 Rabi-ul Thani 1431 AH) many people from throughout UK have attempted to sight the youngest crescent moon (Hilal) of Jumada Al-Awwal after sunset. Most places were overcast, but a few places were able to sight the 31 hours old Hilal between patchy clouds, starting from York Gliding Centre (Rufforth) at 21:00 hrs BST by naked eye and binoculars. The Hilal was also live webcasted from York to the Internet. Therefore, the Ulama have decided that the month of Rabi-ul Thani 1431 AH will have 29 days and the month of Jumada Al-Awwal (or Jumada Al-Ula) 1431 AH will start from Friday 16 April 2010, Insha-Allah. May Allah rewards all those who have tried to revive the Sunnah of moon sighting, this month.

    1. Seen: Saleh Bhai Bhattay (MCW member) from Panama City reported: On April 15, moon was sighted in Panama.

  • Canada:

    1. Not Seen: (Overcast)Baig Muhammad Tamachi (MCW member) from Peterborough Ontario reported: Once again this evening overcast skies above the Western & South-Western horizon prevented the sighting of the hilaal for Jumada-al-Oola (Jumada-Al-Awwal) 1, 1431.

    2. Not Seen: (Clouds)HiMY SYeD (MCW member) from Toronto Ontario reported: After performing Maghrib prayers at home, I ventured to the usual successful moonsighting viewing spots in Christie Pits Park. Unfortunately due to low hanging clouds along the western skies, it is impossible to see any thin crescent tonight. I tried for about 10 minutes and called it a night. You can see the clouds in the photo.

  • USA:

    1. Seen: Javad Torabinejad (MCW member) from Blacksburg VA reported: (Thursday, April 15, 2010), we sighted the crescent moon of Jumada-1 in Blacksburg, VA, first by using binoculars (7X50 and 10X50) and then by naked eye. I arrived at the sighting location before sunset (sunset: 7:56 pm EDT) and left before moonset (moonset: 9:32 pm EDT). The first binocular sighting was at 7:54 pm followed by the naked eye sighting at 7:58 pm (elevation of about 12 degrees). The horns were at 4:30 and 7:00 O'clock (4:30;6:00;7:00). At 8:00 pm, the temperature, dew point, relative humidity, and pressure were 69.8 F, 44.6 F, 40%, and 30.28 in, respectively. The sky was hazy with a few lower clouds close to the western horizon.

    2. Seen: Ms. Ruth Jeffery (MCW member) from Baton Rouge LA reported: The new moon sliver was sighted in Baton Rouge, LA, at 7:49 p.m. on April 15th, well up off of the horizon in perfectly clear skies.

    3. Seen: Mohammed Yahya Shaikh (MCW member) from Culver City CA reported: The Moon for Jumada-al-oola was first sighteed at 7:34 PM just outside my residence in Anaheim, CA. I am attaching some photos hopefully they come out clear.


Friday, 16 April 2010:

  • Australia:

    1. Seen: Dr. Shabbir Ahmed (MCW member) Imam of Rooty Hill Mosque Sydney, NSW reported: Al- Hamdulillah, the Hilaal of Jamaadiyul Oulaa 1431has been sighted in Sydney and most of the states in Australia on April 16. Therefore the Moonsighting Committee and Majlisul Ulamaa� of Australia have declared that the month of Jamaadiyul Oulaa 1431will commence from Saturday, 17th April 2010.

    2. Seen: Engr Manzoor A Mian (MCW member) from Melbourne, VIC reported: I wish to inform you that Jumadi-ul-Awwal crescent has been sighted in Sydney but not in Melbourne today on 16th April 2010 Friday evening. Melbourne horizon remain cloudy this evening. Hence 1st Jumadi-ul-Awwal will be starting from Saturday, 17th April 2010 InshaAllah.

    3. Seen: Zahid Hafeez (MCW member) from Canberra, ACT reported: I sighted the hilal for Jumada this evening (16 April) from the top of Red Hill in Canberra, Australia. The conditions were perfect for viewing and binoculars had to be used initially. The creascent was just a few degrees south of Venus-which was very bright.
